Description
Soga no Umako established this temple as Japan's likely first Buddhist sanctuary in 596, during the reign of empress Suiko. It is also known as “Houkou-ji” and “Gango-ji”. A monk and a temple architect from Baekje shared their knowledge and technology with him and Soga no Umako built the large temple. The main object of worship, a statue of Shaka Nyorai (believed to be the Buddha who created all life), is called the “Asuka Giant Buddha.”
