Oharai-machi

おはらい町

Description

This city features wooden buildings with gabled roofs and entrances on both sides. It is said that during the Edo period, pilgrims who had travelled to Ise Jingu Shrine were welcomed by its low-ranking priests who would entertain the travelers with exorcism rituals and ancient Shinto music and dancing. The city derives its name from “oharai,” or exorcism rituals, that the priests performed.
