Description
In 1572, the year of the burning of Mt. Hiei by Oda Nobunaga, our store's founder Yoshida Gennojo left the battlefield of Goshu Yoshidamura and began a store producing and selling Buddhist altars in Gojo Takakura.
Before long, he was appointed as a sculptor of Buddhist images of the Imperial Palace. In the Genna era, Yoshida was awarded a prestigious award for Buddhist image makers.
Throughout Japan's history of Buddhism, the burning of the Mt. Hiei temples was the event that caused the most disorder, but also led to high demand for Buddhist altar equipment in Kyoto. Following these events, the next supreme ruler Hideyoshi approved the rebuilding of Mt. Hiei, which caused an urgency for the repairs and mending of each temple.
Our founder Yoshida gave all his efforts in the reconstruction, and was able to build a name for himself as one of the few merchants involved in rebuilding Mt. Hiei's temples.
When the era changed to Meiji, our store relocated to Sanjo Kawaramachi and has been here since.
In this way, we have been producing and selling Buddhist altars as a traditional craft of Kyoto for more than 400 years.
