Description

Kozan-ji Temple is a temple of the Sungon sect of Buddhism and built on Mt. Togano. This ancient temple was built by official decree from Emperor Konin during the Nara period. It is known as the birthplace of tea in Japan. Kozan-ji Temple possesses many temple treasures, of which, “The Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans” is particularly famous. It is registered as a world heritage site. During the Kamakura period it was revived as Kozan-ji Temple by the monk Myoe, following an imperial decree of then Emperor, Go-Toba.
