Description
Ageya were where Taiyu (premiere geisha) were summoned to perform for banquets from where they lived in Okiya. Sumiya was the largest private banquet hall in Kyoto during the Edo period. During the Bakumatsu period, those loyal to the emperor, such as Genzui Kusaka, as well as the Shinsengumi, would use this venue. As the only remaining ageya, it is an important cultural property.
