Originally known as Hirihiri Obasan no Soup Curry hirihiri, the restaurant built up a loyal following and continues to attract soup curry fans more than 20 years after opening. In 2023, strong reviews from Tabelog users earned it a place among the site’s “100 Best Curry Shops” for the third time.

Its convenient location, just a 2-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station, is certainly part of the appeal, but the real reason fans keep coming back is the flavor. The soup is fragrant with spices without being overpowering, pairing beautifully with vegetables and a wide range of other ingredients. It is a classic example of what makes Sapporo soup curry so satisfying. In fact, many customers first tried soup curry here and went on to become devoted fans of the dish.

Another highlight is the wide-ranging menu. Alongside staples such as the Vegetable Curry (1,200 yen), packed with 10 kinds of vegetables, you’ll find dishes inspired by Hokkaido flavors, including the Garlic Shrimp Vegetable Curry (1,680 yen) topped with large shrimp.

“Menu items featuring Hokkaido flavors are especially popular with visitors,” explains manager Mr. Takada. “People come to Hokkaido wanting to eat soup curry, but they also want seafood and Jingisukan grilled lamb. We create our menu with those travelers in mind, hoping to let them enjoy several tastes of Hokkaido in one meal.”

Meanwhile, plenty of local regulars return specifically for the restaurant’s monthly specials. Part of the fun is discovering something new with each visit. Some dishes feature unexpected combinations that reveal a whole new side of soup curry, such as a past shirako, or cod milt, special that was available until March 31, 2024. That sense of variety is another reason the restaurant remains popular with locals.

Bringing all those ingredients together is the heart of any soup curry: the soup itself. Here, a tomato-based soup made with chicken stock delivers a finely balanced mix of richness and acidity. Full-bodied yet clean on the finish, it works beautifully with everything from vegetables and chicken to Hokkaido pork and seafood.

Spice levels range from 0 to 30. Even Level 1 is roughly comparable to a medium-spicy Japanese home-style curry, so it already has a noticeable kick. That said, the soup’s savory flavor becomes even more pronounced with added heat, making Levels 2 to 3 a good choice. Levels 0 to 5 are available at no extra charge, while higher levels cost an additional 100 to 300 yen.

You can also give your curry a completely different twist. Try switching to the coconut soup and adding the Extra Cilantro topping (200 yen), and the dish takes on a distinctly Thai-inspired flavor. It’s well worth trying if you want something a little different.

The restaurant’s most popular dish is the Crispy Bone-in Chicken Curry (1,200 yen).

The chicken is finished with garlic oil for crisp skin, while the meat inside is tender enough to fall apart with a spoon. The chicken is delicious, but even the lightly fried broccoli may have you wondering, “Has broccoli always tasted this good?” It is a perfect example of how soup curry can turn vegetables into one of the stars of the dish.

Another highly recommended choice is the restaurant-exclusive Lamb Chop Vegetable Curry (1,980 yen). Originally introduced as a monthly special in February 2024, it proved so popular that the restaurant continued serving it.

Like the chicken leg, the bone-in lamb chop looks impressive as soon as it arrives. The juices from Hokkaido lamb, with its satisfying balance of lean meat and fat, mingle with the lightly tangy soup and add even more depth. It’s a great way to experience Hokkaido lamb beyond the familiar flavors of Jingisukan.

Launched in February 2024, the Cheese-in Hamburger Soup Curry, Medium-Spicy Coconut Soup (1,200 yen) is available exclusively as an instant curry you can take home and heat up. The hamburger patty is filled with melted cheese for an especially rich, satisfying bite. It is sold at the restaurant as well as at locations including New Chitose Airport, making it a convenient Hokkaido souvenir.
