Winter's not yet over in Japan! A huge number of people visit Sapporo in order to enjoy winter sports at such ski resorts as Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort and Sapporo Teine. Next to sightseeing, skiing and snowboarding are the second most popular attractions. There is also a large number of hot springs near Sapporo.

These make an excellent place to stop by after you have enjoyed a day of skiing. They are conveniently located making them easy destinations to visit on your way back to Sapporo.

■ Sapporo Kitahiroshima Classe Hotel

The Sapporo Kitahiroshima Classe Hotel is just a 20-minute drive from the Dynasty Ski Resort making it convenient for a day visit to a hot spring. The soft, yellow-brown natural hot waters springing up from about 1,500 meters underground is a feature of a Moor hot spring. The water is noted for making the skin feel soft and moist. Sitting in an outdoor hot spring enjoying the winter scenery is a great experience.

The large windows in the indoor bath also afford an excellent view of the rich, natural scenery of Hokkaido.

The wonderful view from the hot springs is not the only attraction of the Sapporo Kitahiroshima Classe Hotel. You can also sit in the Ganbanyoku [bedrock bath] Healthy Dome made from hokutolite and black silica stones.
And as it is possible to use the baths until 10:00 p.m. (admission until 9:30 p.m.), you can enjoy a luxurious soak even after spending the whole day at a ski resort. The Sapporo Kitahiroshima Classe Hotel is in itself a resort hotel, so here, too, you can enjoy snow rafting, 4-wheel-drive ATVs, and snow tubing.

■ Hoheikyo Hot Springs

■ Hoheikyo Hot Springs

Hoheikyo Hot Springs is located 5 minutes by car from the Jozankei hot-spring district, a popular spa town nestled in a picturesque valley, and is a convenient place to stop by especially when returning to Sapporo city from the Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort.
In the Jozankei hot-spring town, few institutions accept day-trip bathing on weekends, and those that do mostly limit their hours to the daytime. In that respect the Hoheikyo Hot Springs specifically caters to day-trip visitors by staying open until 10:30 p.m. It is also possible to get something to eat until 9:00 p.m. which also makes it attractive to skiers.

The spring water of Hoheikyo Hot Springs is rich in salt and calcium. For that reason, there are lots of yunohana [mineral deposits resembling flowers] on the floor. This is proof of the high mineral content which leaves your skin feeling smooth and moist after bathing.
The temperature of the baths is a bit higher because the 51.5-degree water is not diluted but left as it is. This outdoor hot spring will thoroughly warm you.

Be sure to enjoy the open-air outdoor bath at Hoheikyo Hot Springs. Leisurely soaking in the hot spring lined with large rocks one can feel a soothing sense of Japanese pathos in the winter landscape.
This hot spring is also famous for Indian curry made by a chef from India. Many come just for the curry and the delicious naan served with it.

After leisurely pampering yourself in these baths, you can relax in a room filled with about 8,500 comic books. The facility is open 24 hours a day so you can lounge here until morning if you like.
