Hokkaido Rail Travel Guide: Why an Overnight Stay in Noboribetsu or Lake Toya Onsen Makes Sense — Plus Smart Booking Tips
- Written by: Robotan
Mornings in Hakodate begin with the feeling of the sea. For many people, the lively market atmosphere and a steaming hot breakfast are what make them truly feel that they have arrived in Hokkaido. Once you have enjoyed Hakodate, the next stop is Sapporo. This route is one of the most classic and is also very popular with overseas travelers.
That said, it takes about four hours by limited express train from Hakodate to Sapporo. Even if the transportation itself is smooth, spending a long time on the train can easily wear you out, and the day tends to end up feeling like nothing more than a travel day. If you have large suitcases, the stress of carrying luggage and moving around also becomes a concern.
That is why, as a travel writer based in Hokkaido, I would like to suggest a travel plan that includes one overnight stay in either Noboribetsu Onsen or Lake Toya Onsen on your travel day from Hakodate to Sapporo.
By intentionally adding an overnight stay to the travel day, you create more room both physically and in terms of time, while naturally working refreshment at a hot spring inn and the kind of natural scenery that feels uniquely Hokkaido into your itinerary.
In this article, I will explain not only the details of this stopover and overnight-stay plan, but also practical points that only someone from Hokkaido would know, such as how to check train timetables, how to reserve limited express trains, and how to handle large suitcases.
I have put together transportation tips that you can put into practice without confusion even on your first trip to Hokkaido.

The Benefits of Staying Overnight in Noboribetsu or Lake Toya Onsen Instead of Traveling Straight Through

If you choose a direct route from Hakodate to Sapporo, the transportation itself may be smooth, but the downside is that it tends to leave you with less physical energy and less flexibility in your time.
Especially after a long-haul flight or on a trip with a lot of luggage, the fatigue from the travel day can easily affect your overall satisfaction from the following days onward.
If you stay overnight in Noboribetsu or Lake Toya Onsen, the travel day becomes a day to reset your fatigue, and the difference in how easily you can move around after arriving in Sapporo is surprising.
I have compared the differences between the two plans and summarized them in a simple table below.
| Category | Direct Plan | One-Night Onsen Stay Plan |
|---|---|---|
| How the travel feels | Tends to feel long | Feels easier because it is split up |
| Fatigue level | Tends to build up | Easier to reset with a hot spring |
| Meals | Often at stations or on the train | You can also enjoy dinner at a ryokan |
| Travel memories | The travel day tends to feel less memorable | The hot spring experience is more likely to remain a strong memory |
| After a long-haul flight | The burden is greater because you keep traveling | The burden is lighter because there is a day for rest |
The direct plan is for people who prioritize time and want to maximize their stay in Sapporo by even a single minute. On the other hand, a one-night onsen stay transforms the travel day into both a rest day and an experience, so it is better suited to people with a lot of luggage or those who want to travel at a more relaxed pace.
Choosing the Right Pass: A Comparison of Two JR Options

The key to making this travel plan work smoothly is deciding at the beginning which JR pass to use.
For a trip that involves traveling across Hakodate, Noboribetsu or Lake Toya, and Sapporo, choosing a pass that covers a wider area makes it easier to build a more cost-effective itinerary.
The two main options for this route are the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass and the Hokkaido Rail Pass. Both are excellent-value passes that can only be purchased by travelers holding a non-Japanese passport. Because the areas they cover and the kinds of trips they are best suited for are slightly different, you should choose the one that matches your itinerary.
The differences between the two passes are shown in the table below.
Comparison of the Hokkaido Rail Pass and the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass
| Category | Hokkaido Rail Pass | JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass |

One more point I would especially recommend as a local travel writer is that on the Limited Express Hokuto from Hakodate toward Noboribetsu or Lake Toya, there are sections where you can see views of Funka Bay if the timing is right. If the reservation screen lets you check the seat map, choosing a seat on the ocean side gives you a better chance of enjoying the view from the train window.
[Important] How to Check the Latest Timetables and Stops Yourself
To ensure a smooth process when purchasing passes and reserving seats, it’s essential to check timetables and station stops in advance. Train schedules can change depending on the season and circumstances, so confirming the latest information ahead of time is key.
In this section, I’ll walk you through how to use JR Hokkaido’s English timetable search together with Google Maps to check limited express train schedules from Hakodate to Noboribetsu and Lake Toya, including station stops and real-time operating information for the day of travel.
Step 1: Check Timetables and Stopping Stations on the JR Hokkaido Official Website

First, open the English-language Timetable Search on the JR Hokkaido website and enter your departure point and destination.
Enter Hakodate as the departure point and Noboribetsu or Toya as the destination, then select the station name when the options appear.
Next, set the date and time and press Search, and a list of train options will be displayed.

The important point here is to make sure that the Limited Express Hokuto service you choose actually stops at Noboribetsu Station or Toya Station. The stopping stations can vary depending on the train.
Note: As is also shown on the screen, there may be restrictions on the dates you can search around timetable revision periods. Please adjust the search date according to the notice displayed.
Step 2: Check Same-Day Service Conditions on Google Maps
Once you have found your candidate train on JR Hokkaido’s official search, it is reassuring to search the same section on Google Maps just before departure as well.
Especially in winter in Hokkaido, train schedules can be disrupted by snow or strong winds.
The method is simple. On Google Maps, enter Hakodate → Noboribetsu or Hakodate → Toya, then open the public transportation route search.
Once the candidate route appears, check whether the departure time or travel time has become unusually long.
If there are delays or cancellations, this makes it easier to decide whether to switch to another train or allow for extra waiting time at the station.
The key to keeping your itinerary on track is to check once on the day itself before heading to the station, rather than the day before. Just doing that makes it much easier to stay calm and adjust your plans if needed.
Two Important Points to Keep in Mind Before Booking
Please note that even when the destination is the same, the Limited Express Hokuto does not always stop at the same stations depending on the service.
If you are traveling from Hakodate to Noboribetsu or Toya, do not choose based only on the departure and arrival times shown in the search results. Be sure to confirm first that Noboribetsu Station or Toya Station is included among the stops before making your choice.
If you check the stopping stations in advance, it also becomes much easier to plan your bus connection after arrival and your hotel check-in time.
The second important point is that, from March 14, 2026, all limited express trains within Hokkaido began operating with fully reserved seating only, so unlike before, there are no non-reserved cars. That means it is a good idea to secure your reserved-seat tickets in advance.
Seats can fill up during Japanese public holidays, long holiday periods, peak seasons, and weekends, so the earlier you know your travel dates, the better.
Once your itinerary is decided, check the timetable and secure your reserved seat as soon as possible.
A Complete Guide to Stress-Free Travel by Train and Bus
From here, I will organize the trip from Hakodate to Noboribetsu or Toya in the form of easy-to-follow model routes.
I have put everything together in a way that you can apply directly to your own itinerary, including how to choose your train, how to connect to buses or taxis after arriving at the station, and how to move around once you get there.
The following is a model case based on timetables as of spring 2026. Timetables may change depending on the season or timetable revisions. Please be sure to check the latest official information.
Model Route 1: Hakodate → Noboribetsu (Limited Express Hokuto)

From Hakodate to Noboribetsu takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. For example, if you board Limited Express Hokuto No. 11 departing at 12:14, you can travel while enjoying a spectacular route heading north along Funka Bay.
Outside the train window, you will see the sea, forests, and pasturelands. Enjoying an ekiben (train lunch box) while taking in scenery that feels unmistakably Hokkaido turns this travel time into an experience in itself.
At present, there is no food cart service on the Limited Express Hokuto, so I recommend buying whatever you want to eat on board in advance at Hakodate Station.

When it comes to choosing an ekiben, it is easy to get lost among all the options, but my personal recommendation for a classic option is the famous ikameshi (rice-stuffed squid) from Abe Shoten in Mori Town or the crab rice bento known as a specialty of Oshamambe.
Many of these can be purchased inside Hakodate Station, so it is best to allow yourself a little extra time before departure.
Once you board the Limited Express Hokuto and settle into your comfortable seat, you can finally take a breath. As small towns begin to appear outside the windows, you start to notice people checking their guidebooks, others sipping coffee while watching the scenery, and a feeling gradually spreads through the carriage that everyone is shifting into travel mode.
Beyond the train window stretches the sea of Funka Bay. At just that moment, you open the package of ikameshi you bought at Hakodate Station. The motion of the train, the sea view, and the gently sweet and savory aroma of squid. Before you know it, the travel time itself has become part of the Hokkaido journey.

Once you arrive at Noboribetsu Station, you will travel to the hot spring town by bus or taxi.
If you want a little time before check-in to walk around the hot spring town or enjoy one of the footbath spots, choosing a train that departs in the morning will give you more flexibility.
If you take a service leaving Hakodate at around 9:48, there are days when you can arrive in Noboribetsu around noon, making it easier to head to your accommodation even after stopping for lunch in the hot spring town.
Model Route 2: Hakodate → Toya (Limited Express Hokuto)

The overall flow from Hakodate to Toya is almost the same. You take the Limited Express Hokuto to Toya Station, then continue on to Lake Toya Onsen from the station.
From Toya Station to the hot spring town, the usual options are bus, hotel shuttle, or taxi.
For example, if you choose a train such as Hokuto No. 7 (departing 10:05 → arriving 11:58) or Hokuto No. 9 (departing 10:45 → arriving 12:38), which gets you into Toya between the morning and midday hours, you can use the afternoon at a relaxed pace.
After arriving, a very Lake Toya-like way to spend your time is to keep the plan unhurried, perhaps taking a light walk along the lakeshore or stopping at a café for a break.
Getting from the Station to the Onsen Area: Bus and Taxi Connections Explained
Both Noboribetsu Onsen and Lake Toya Onsen can be reached by JR limited express train, but the way you move after arriving at the station is a little different.
Noboribetsu has a bus system that is relatively easy to understand and involves a short enough distance that it is not hard to navigate, while at Lake Toya, hotels are scattered along the lakeshore, so comfort can vary depending on where you get off the bus and whether your hotel offers a shuttle service.
Here, I will clearly explain how to get from the station to the hot spring town, including how to choose between bus, taxi, and hotel shuttle.
Noboribetsu Onsen | The Classic Route: Easy to Navigate from the Station and Reachable by a Single Bus

One of Noboribetsu Onsen’s strengths is how easy the route from the station to the hot spring town is to understand.
When you exit JR Noboribetsu Station, there is a rotary right in front of you, and the bus stop is immediately nearby. Basically, all you need to do is take a Donan Bus bound for Noboribetsu Onsen Terminal.
- [Basic Guide]
- ・Board: Donan Bus bound for Noboribetsu Onsen (Noboribetsu Onsen Terminal)
・Get off: Noboribetsu Onsen Terminal
・Travel time: About 27 minutes
・Fare: About 450 yen
・Suitcases: Can be brought on board
*Boarding procedures and payment methods may vary depending on the bus, so be sure to check the signs at the bus stop and the information provided on board in advance.
*Because it can be difficult to change money on the bus when it is crowded, it is reassuring to have coins ready. Large banknotes may not be accepted for change.
The number of buses varies depending on the time of day, but there are often several per hour, which is another convenient point because they tend to connect well after limited express arrivals.
Since hotels are concentrated around Noboribetsu Onsen Terminal, once you arrive, it should be fairly easy to find your way by walking to your hotel using Google Maps. There are some slopes, but the walking distance is short, and there are also restaurants and convenience stores nearby.
If you have a lot of luggage, or if you do not want to walk in rain or snow, taking a taxi is also an effective option.
The ride takes about 10 minutes, and the fare is around 2,000 yen. The more tired you are that day, the more comfortable it can be to simply take a taxi without pushing yourself.

Lake Toya Onsen | Multiple Transport Options, Even If You’re Traveling with Luggage

One of Lake Toya Onsen’s strengths is that there are multiple ways to get from the station to the hot spring town.
You can take a local bus at a relaxed pace, or if you use a hotel’s free shuttle service or a taxi, you can move comfortably even on days when you have a lot of luggage.
- [Basic Guide for Taking the Local Bus]
- ・Boarding point: The Toya Ekimae bus stop immediately after exiting the ticket gate at JR Toya Station
・Travel time: About 26 minutes
・Fare: About 400 yen
・Suitcases: Can be brought on board
*Because this is also a Donan Bus route, the boarding procedure is the same as for Noboribetsu Onsen.
Since hotels in Lake Toya Onsen are scattered along the lakeshore, the key when using the local bus is deciding in advance which bus stop you should get off at. You should check beforehand which stop is closest to your hotel, such as Sakuramachi, Chuo-dori, or Toyako Onsen Bus Terminal.
If you feel unsure about where to get off, or if moving by bus with a lot of luggage sounds difficult, it is smoother to choose a hotel that offers a free shuttle service.
Because this is often by advance reservation, be sure to confirm at the time of booking whether a shuttle is available and how to arrange it. The more you are traveling with seniors, children, or a lot of luggage on a long trip, the more reassuring a shuttle service can feel.
A taxi is also a useful option. The fare is around 2,800 yen, and depending on the situation, one may be relatively easy to catch.
One of the good things about Lake Toya Onsen is that you can choose between bus, taxi, and hotel shuttle according to how much luggage you have and how much energy you have that day.
Where to Stay in Noboribetsu and Lake Toya Onsen: Area Highlights and Recommended Hotels
Both Noboribetsu and Lake Toya are popular hot spring destinations that are easy to stop at along the way from Hakodate to Sapporo.
That said, the atmosphere of the hot spring town, how you spend your time there, and the way you choose your hotel are slightly different.
From here, as someone who has visited both hot spring areas many times, I will introduce the character and appeal of each one, along with recommended hotels that suit different travel styles.
*Important: Taxes from April 2026 onward
In Hokkaido, an accommodation tax was introduced from April 1, 2026. Lake Toya in particular has an additional local accommodation tax imposed by the town. In addition, at inns in Noboribetsu Onsen and Lake Toya Onsen, a bathing tax must generally be paid separately on site. In many cases, these charges are not included in the price shown at the time of booking, so it is a good idea to budget based on the following table.
Estimated taxes per adult per night from April 2026 onward
| Accommodation area | Hokkaido accommodation tax | Municipal accommodation tax | Bathing tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noboribetsu Onsen | 100 to 500 yen | None | 300 yen |
| Lake Toya Onsen | 100 to 500 yen | 200 to 1,000 yen | 100 yen |
Noboribetsu Onsen | A Classic Hot Spring Destination with an Authentic Onsen Experience

Noboribetsu Onsen is one of Hokkaido’s most representative hot spring destinations.
The steaming scenery of Jigokudani makes it easy to feel as soon as you arrive that you have truly come to a hot spring resort, and the walking experience there is highly satisfying as well. Because the hot spring town is relatively compact, it is easy to get around even on a travel day, and that is one of its attractions, because it makes the schedule easier to plan even for first-time visitors.
When choosing a hotel, it becomes easier to find one that matches your preferences if you think not only about the quality of the hot springs, but also whether you want to stay right in the heart of the hot spring town and whether food is one of your priorities.
Dai-ichi Takimotokan

- Conveniently located right by Jigokudani, making it a great base for walking around the hot spring town
- The large public bath is spacious, with a wide variety of baths
- You can choose either a buffet or a traditional Japanese kaiseki meal
This long-established hotel stands right beside Jigokudani. Its greatest attraction is that you can enjoy five different types of hot spring water, which is half of Japan’s ten officially recognized categories of hot spring water, all at one facility in a variety of baths. The large public bath has an impressive sense of scale and feels like several baths in one. It is also conveniently located as a base for walking around Jigokudani, which makes it easy to fit a stroll through the hot spring town into your plans before or after check-in. The meals, where you can choose either a buffet or a Japanese kaiseki course, are also well regarded, making this a versatile hotel that I would confidently recommend even for a first trip to Noboribetsu.

The dinner buffet, where you can enjoy seasonal flavors of Hokkaido, is well regarded, making it an easy choice for families and groups as well. It is also easy to walk around the hot spring town from here, and the facilities themselves are satisfying enough that even a stay centered on the hotel feels worthwhile, so I recommend it for travelers who want to fully enjoy both the hot springs and the food in one place.

Lake Toya Onsen | A Relaxing Lakeside Hot Spring Town with Beautiful Views

The appeal of Lake Toya Onsen is that, in addition to the hot springs themselves, you can make the lake scenery part of your travel experience. Even just taking a short walk along the lakeshore after arriving helps shift your mood and makes it easier not to carry over the fatigue of the travel day.
On the other hand, because hotels around Lake Toya are scattered along the lakeshore, ease of access becomes an important factor when choosing where to stay. For travelers with a lot of luggage or those visiting for the first time, choosing a hotel that offers shuttle service from JR Toya Station makes a big difference in peace of mind.
Because shuttle services are generally by advance reservation and fixed times, be sure to check the conditions when making your booking. Also, in Toyako Town, a revision to the local ordinance in April 2026 reduced the bathing tax from 300 yen to 100 yen, while a new accommodation tax was introduced.

The scenery outside the windows alone creates a special feeling, and the fatigue of a travel day slowly melts away here. Another reassuring point is that you can use a reservation-only shuttle bus from JR Toya Station (reservations must be made by 6:00 p.m. the day before). With a full range of restaurants, you can enjoy a relaxed dinner inside the hotel in the evening, then spend a quiet morning with the view. I highly recommend it for travelers who want the very best kind of travel experience, one where they can have the dreamlike scenery of Lake Toya all to themselves.

Travel Light: Send Your Large Suitcase Ahead with Luggage Delivery Services

You can bring large luggage onto the Limited Express Hokuto, but neither Noboribetsu Station nor Toya Station is a particularly large station. Even if there are coin lockers, the number is limited, and local buses do not necessarily come equipped with dedicated space for suitcases as a standard feature, so if you have large luggage, the transportation itself can become a burden.
That is why I recommend using a luggage delivery service that lets you send your bags from one hotel to the next.
Among these, Yamato Transport’s Takkyubin is especially well known and is a great ally for long-distance travelers. If you send your luggage ahead from your hotel to your next accommodation, you can spend your travel day carrying only what you need for one night.
- [Schedule]
Day 1: Stay in Hakodate
Day 2: Stay in Noboribetsu or Toya
Day 3: Stay in Sapporo - [How it works]
・On the morning of Day 2, send your suitcase from your hotel in Hakodate (rough guide: 8:00–10:00 a.m.)
・Set the delivery destination as the hotel where you will stay in Sapporo on Day 3
・Specify the desired delivery date to match your check-in date (there may be limits on how far ahead you can specify)
After that, all you need to do is board the limited express train with only the luggage you need for one night. Even if you stop over along the way, being able to travel light makes station transfers and bus transportation dramatically easier.
Please note that some hotel front desks may have a cutoff time for accepting luggage deliveries.
If you plan to use this service, I recommend confirming at check-in what time you need to request the shipment by the next morning. Cutoff times vary by hotel, and delays are also possible during bad weather or busy periods, so be sure to arrange it with some extra time to spare.
The cost varies depending on the size of the luggage and the distance, but as a rough guide, it is best to budget a few thousand yen per item.
Helpful Tips to Make Your Journey from Hakodate to Sapporo Even More Comfortable
Once you try a trip that includes one night at a hot spring along the way, it feels surprisingly easy.
That said, if it is your first time, it is natural for small concerns to come up, such as luggage, what to wear, and how much to do on the travel day.
Here, I have put together some of the most common questions about stopover travel between Hakodate and Sapporo in a Q&A format.
Q1: Is it okay to travel with a large suitcase?
It is possible to travel with large suitcases. However, in Noboribetsu and Toya, getting from the station often involves slopes and bus travel, and the larger your luggage is, the more of a burden it becomes. If you have the option, the most comfortable approach is to send your suitcase from your hotel in Hakodate to your hotel in Sapporo by delivery service, and travel on the move day with only what you need for one night.
Q2: What should I wear? How cold is Hokkaido?
It depends on the season and the weather, but as a basic rule, it is best to assume that it gets chilly outdoors and that the train can feel dry inside. Even if it is warm during the day, temperatures can drop at night, and along the lakeshore, the wind can make it feel colder than what the forecast may say, so I recommend bringing at least one light outer layer that you can put on in case you get cold.
Q3: Is it okay to pack sightseeing into the travel day?
My recommendation is not to pack in too much. The journey between Hakodate and Sapporo involves enough distance and time that even I, after living in Hokkaido for many years, still feel the fatigue from it. If you think of your hot spring overnight stay as a day for transportation plus a little sightseeing, your stay in Sapporo from the following day onward will feel much easier.
Q4: What should I actually do at the hot spring destination?
You do not need to force extra plans into it. If you are unsure, the best answer is to include just one classic sightseeing activity that gives high satisfaction in a short time, such as Jigokudani in Noboribetsu or a lakeside walk at Lake Toya, and then simply rest in the hot spring. In the Lake Toya area, fireworks can also be enjoyed during certain seasons, so it is worth checking with your hotel or local information sources.
Turn Your Travel Day into a Highlight of the Trip

The roughly four hours between Hakodate and Sapporo is one of those parts of a Hokkaido trip that can easily end up remembered as nothing more than transportation. That is exactly why adding just one overnight stay in Noboribetsu or Lake Toya Onsen can completely change the impression of the trip.
Reset your fatigue in a hot spring, catch your breath in a town with beautiful scenery, and then continue on to sightseeing in Sapporo. Try enjoying your trip with the feeling that you are creating one peak travel moment right in the middle of the journey.
Send your luggage ahead by delivery service so you can travel light. Do not try to do too much on the travel day. Just those small choices can make a Hokkaido rail trip feel surprisingly more comfortable.
