Description
Perched at about 750m above sea level, Shirogane Blue Pond appears almost out of nowhere — a pool of glowing "Biei blue" water dotted with the bare trunks of dead larch trees. It was formed by accident during erosion-control construction, but the result is one of Hokkaido's most photographed landscapes. The color shifts with the light, the weather, and the season, so no two visits look quite the same. Clear early mornings tend to show the purest blue. Between the fresh green of summer, the fall colors, and the winter light-up, it's a year-round highlight near Biei.
