Taiyo-no-Oka Engaru Park is home to one of Japan’s largest cosmos flower fields, with the best viewing typically from late August through late September. Around 20 varieties bloom across the hills, from classic pink, white, and red cosmos to vibrant yellow and orange sulfur cosmos.

Against the brilliant blue skies of the Okhotsk region, millions of flowers swaying in the crisp autumn breeze create a spectacular sea of color. During the flowering season, paid sightseeing carts also operate through the garden, making it easy for families with young children and visitors with limited mobility to enjoy the expansive grounds.

Since the cosmos garden opened in 2003, more than 2,000 local residents and volunteers have helped care for the fields each year. Their work ranges from weeding through the summer to collecting seeds after the autumn bloom.

That community spirit, rooted in the hope that visitors will enjoy their time in Engaru, helped the garden earn the Flower Tourism Award from the Japan Tourism Association in 2005.

In Japan, September 14 is known as Cosmos Day, falling exactly six months after White Day. It is a day for giving cosmos flowers to someone special as a heartfelt gesture.

Around this time, Taiyo-no-Oka adds even more fun to the flower season with events such as a senryu poetry contest, Instagram photo competition, and cosmos concerts, giving visitors more ways to enjoy the colorful fields.

From July through early October, the park sells a selection of local Engaru specialties. Don’t miss the rich, creamy fresh milk soft-serve ice cream, a refreshing treat after exploring the flower fields.
