Get Ready First! Smart Tax-Free Shopping Tips So You Never Rush at the Register

Searching for discount information at the register once you are already in a Japanese store is a hassle, and outdated information online can easily mislead you.
To shop at Yamada Denki quickly and at the best price, bookmark the LIVE JAPAN coupon page for Yamada Denki before your trip. You can pull it up on your smartphone in seconds, and it always shows the latest discount rates and terms of use.
Show the barcode on that page before you pay to receive a special discount of up to 7% (valid until December 31, 2026; some items excluded). Also note that from November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to a refund-at-departure system. See the details below.
Note down the items you want from the list in this article, then start with this step.
[Updated October 14, 2026] From November 1, 2026, tax-free shopping in Japan switches to a refund-at-departure system
- For purchases made on or after November 1, 2026, you pay the tax-inclusive price in store and get the tax refunded when you leave Japan
- When leaving Japan, take your purchases to customs for inspection before you check in your luggage
- You must leave Japan within 90 days of purchase
- The minimum is 5,000 yen (excluding tax) per store per day. General goods and consumables are no longer treated separately, and the purchase limit and special sealed packaging for consumables have been abolished
- If even one item from the same receipt is not with you, none of the items on that receipt will be refunded. Pay separately for anything you plan to use in Japan
- Show your passport at checkout (for visitors who entered Japan with short-term stay status, such as tourists)

[1] Why Yamada Denki Is a Smart Choice for Shopping in Japan: Medicine, Beauty Appliances, and Cameras in One Store
On a trip to Japan, it is easy to lose time going back and forth between drugstores, electronics stores, and toy shops. Yamada Denki's large LABI stores carry not only home appliances and cameras but also medicines, cosmetics, daily goods, and hobby items, so you can get a lot done in a single store.
Yamada Denki has more than 300 tax-free stores across Japan, and you can complete the tax-free procedure for your purchases at one counter. Add the up to 7% discount from the LIVE JAPAN coupon, and you can make the most of both your limited travel time and your budget.
[2] Waste No Time on the Move! Yamada Denki Stores on Your Way to the Airport or Shinkansen
Japan itineraries are often packed, so there is no need to go out of your way just to shop. Yamada Denki runs large LABI stores that carry almost everything, right in front of major stations that travelers pass through.
They are especially convenient for a stop before heading to Narita Airport or Haneda Airport, or before boarding the Shinkansen. For example, Yamada Denki LABI Tokyo Yaesu, a 2-minute walk from Tokyo Station, turns even the spare minutes before an airport express or Shinkansen into tax-free shopping time.
Beyond Tokyo Yaesu, you will find Yamada Denki tax-free stores in popular areas across Japan, from Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Shibuya in Tokyo to Namba and Sannomiya in the Kansai region, as well as Hakodate in Hokkaido and Naha in Okinawa. Wherever your trip takes you, you can enjoy the same tax exemption and coupon discount.

[3] Hand-Picked by Category! The Ultimate Japan Shopping List
Here are items available at Yamada Denki that are worth bringing home from your trip to Japan, organized by category.
Trusted Japanese Medicines Worth Stocking Up On

Alinamin EX Plus (270 tablets) for when you feel tired, and MegRhythm Steam Hot Eye Masks, a must-have for long flights, are popular items that many people buy by the box.
Experience Japanese Beauty Tech! Premium Beauty Appliances and Skincare
Japanese beauty appliances are known for their refined technology and design. At Yamada Denki, you can try and compare products in person, then buy them with both the tax exemption and the coupon discount.
Top-Class Facial Devices and Hair Care (YA-MAN, MTG ReFa, Panasonic, and More)
YA-MAN's cutting-edge facial devices (such as the Photo PLUS series), MTG's ReFa shower heads and beauty rollers, and Panasonic's nanocare hair dryers are popular treats to bring home from Japan. Before buying any appliance, check the voltage and plug tips at the end of this article.
YA-MAN Corner

YA-MAN's greatest strength is its high-performance, gadget-like appeal, packed with the expertise of a dedicated beauty manufacturer. It condenses advanced technologies used in beauty salons, such as RF (radio frequency), EMS (electrical muscle stimulation), LED, and ultrasound, into home-use devices. Rather than simply cleansing or drying, YA-MAN takes a bold approach that aims to work directly on the skin and muscles.
ReFa Corner

Known first for its iconic facial rollers and now also popular for hair care and shower heads, ReFa stands out for its striking design and the experience it delivers. Its unique microcurrent and water and heat control technologies instantly bring out a beautifully smooth texture in skin and hair. With elegant cut patterns and silver shine that look like interior pieces on their own, ReFa satisfies both the desire to own and a sense of beauty.
Panasonic Beauty Corner

Panasonic Beauty, from one of Japan's best-known home appliance makers, is trusted for products anyone can use safely with reliable results. It is built on proven, science-based technology, starting with its signature "High-Penetration nanoe." Designed to fit into daily life, it helps you look your best without effort, simply as part of your usual hair drying and face washing routine.
Dyson Corner

Its greatest strengths are powerful airflow and intelligent heat control (precise temperature management).
While conventional hair dryers evaporate moisture with heat, Dyson blows moisture away with strong airflow. It measures air temperature more than 40 times per second to prevent excessive heat, protecting the keratin (protein) in your hair and preserving its natural shine. By placing the motor in the handle instead of the head, it also achieves a well-balanced weight that keeps your arm from tiring.
Gentle Skincare and Cosmetics for Sensitive Skin (Shiseido d program, Chifure, and More)
For sensitive skin, many shoppers buy the full line of Shiseido's d program (Essence-in Cleansing Foam, Lotion, and Emulsion). Chifure moisturizing lotion that you can use generously every day, deeply moisturizing Curel sheet masks, and long-lasting Maquillage Dramatic Powdery EX foundation are also popular. The biggest advantage is being able to buy them tax-free in one go, on the same floor as home appliances.
Make Everyday Life Easier! Must-Have Daily Goods and Oral Care
Some of the best things to bring home from Japan are its thoughtfully made daily goods.
Food Wrap (Kitchenista Wrap and More)
Japanese-quality food wrap that cuts cleanly and clings tightly to dishes is one of those everyday items you will not want to go without once you try it. Boxed sizes such as 30 cm x 50 m and 22 cm x 50 m also fit neatly into the gaps in your suitcase.
High-Performance Toothbrushes and Dental Floss (Systema, Ebisu, and More)
You can stock up on precisely designed oral care products, such as Systema Haguki Plus, Ebisu point brushes, and micro floss, all in one place.
Masterfully Crafted Nail Clippers and Hair Scissors (Green Bell and More)
Green Bell's premium nail clippers (such as the G1203) and haircut and thinning scissor sets showcase Japanese craftsmanship. Famous for staying sharp, they also make great gifts.
Enjoy a Taste of Japan at Home (Iwatani Takoyaki Maker and More)
Iwatani takoyaki makers (such as the En-Tako) are perfect for enjoying Japanese flavors at home with family and friends. Note that gas cartridges cannot be taken on planes, so buy compatible cartridges after you get home.
Feed Your Curiosity! The Latest Gadgets and Japan's Proud Hobby Culture
Professional Cameras and Lenses (Sony Alpha 7 V, ZV-E10 II, FUJIFILM X-E5, Nikon Z50, and More)
To capture your travel landscapes and everyday moments with family in high quality, you can buy gear such as Sony's latest full-frame camera, the Alpha 7 V (ILCE-7M5), the ZV-E10 II vlog camera, FUJIFILM's latest mirrorless X-E5, the Nikon Z50 Double Zoom Kit, and Canon RF lenses at a great value by combining the tax exemption and the coupon discount.
Smartwatches and Audio (Garmin fenix 8 Pro, Marshall, and More)

Garmin, which started out in aircraft and marine navigation, is a leading name in GPS. More than a smartwatch, it is a professional measuring instrument you wear on your wrist. Its depth of data analysis for activities such as running, triathlon, mountain climbing, and golf is second to none. Features like Body Battery, which shows your remaining energy, solar charging, and 100 m water resistance reflect its toughness built for harsh environments.
It is smart to see and try products such as Garmin's top-of-the-line fenix 8 Pro 51 mm, built for business and rugged outdoor use, and Marshall's Willen II portable speaker in person at a store in Japan to make sure you get exactly what you want.

Amazfit's greatest strengths are outstanding value for money, a light feel, and fashionable design. Despite its affordable price, it packs in features of higher-end models, such as a large AMOLED display, GPS, more than 100 sports modes, and long battery life. Its own operating system, Zepp OS, runs very smoothly, and it offers a wide range of designs, from playful square styles to rugged outdoor models.

HUAWEI overcomes the smartwatch weakness of daily charging while focusing on a beautiful design like a luxury watch. Premium materials such as titanium, ceramic, and sapphire glass mean it fits right in at business and formal occasions. It also offers rich sleep and stress tracking features, and the battery lasts one to two weeks with typical use.
Top-Class Hobbies and Games for Adults (PG UNLEASHED, Nintendo Switch Games, Sanrio)
Popular picks include the ultimate Gunpla kit for adults, the PG UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam, Nintendo Switch games such as the latest Mario titles, Sanrio goods (limited-edition Kuromi and Hello Kitty items) that make great gifts, konjac jelly as a souvenir, and Cielo hair color cream for gray hair.
[4] Before You Fly Home: Check Voltage, Quantities, and Airline Rules
Voltage and plugs: Japanese appliances are designed for 100V, and Japan uses Type A plugs with two flat pins. If your home country uses a different voltage, such as 220-240V, products rated for 100V only cannot be used as they are. Choose models labeled 100-240V, or prepare a transformer and a plug adapter.
Quantities: The new system abolishes the purchase limit on consumables, but your home country's customs rules still apply, including duty-free allowances and limits on medicines and cosmetics. Check the latest rules before you travel.
Airline rules: Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in your cabin baggage and cannot be checked in. Dangerous goods such as gas cartridges cannot be taken on planes.
[5] Final Check Before You Pay! Don't Forget Your Discount
Is your Japan shopping list ready? Here is the most important money-saving tip one more time.
Right before paying at the tax-free counter or register, open the coupon page you saved at the beginning. It always shows the latest, accurate discount barcode, so you can receive a special discount of up to 7% just by showing it (some items, such as Apple products and game consoles, are excluded).
Before heading to a tax-free counter at any Yamada Denki group store in Japan, open the page below and have the barcode screen ready.
Rather than spending your limited time in Japan going from store to store, save it for great food, sightseeing, and experiences you can only have in Japan.
From medicines and beauty appliances to cameras, daily goods, and hobby items, get everything you need in one place on the best possible terms at Yamada Denki, and enjoy a smoother, more relaxed trip.
