Three 'Mystery Solving/Horror Events' at Hotels and Lodges in Japan! (Spring/Summer 2021)
- Written by: Ran Tanaka
“Mystery solving events” and “horror events” in which participants solve puzzles and escape the play area within a specified time limit are all the rage in Japan at the moment. They maintain proper social distancing, and some recent and upcoming events are taking place in hotels and lodges.
Here are some of the events happening at hotels and lodges all over Japan in the spring and summer of 2021. During these immersive, live “mystery novels,” you’ll become a detective trying to find a criminal by the time you check out or unravel the bizarre phenomena occurring in a forest lodge!
*Event dates and activities may change depending on the public health situation. When going out, please avoid congested areas and take proper measures against infectious diseases.
Tokyo Hotel Metropolitan: Find the criminal by check-out in the participatory “Detective Accommodation Plan”!
The “participatory reasoning accommodation plan” called “Mystery Hotel Urban Labyrinth Check In - The night begins-” is now available at five Tokyo Hotel Metropolitan locations, including Hotel Metropolitan (Ikebukuro).
Hotel Metropolitan (Ikebukuro) has been holding a “Mystery Night” theater-style performance for over 30 years. To avoid crowding during the pandemic, the first “Mystery Hotel” event began via an on-demand broadcast on the in-room TV and information available in the hotel in July 2020, and now the second edition is under way.
In the new story “Mystery Hotel Urban Labyrinth Check In - The night begins-,” participants must discover the truth surrounding the mysterious death of a person who attended a “secret meeting” by investigating the restaurants and locations where the secret meeting attendees ate, solve the case, and “check out safely” from the hotel.
After checking in, pick up a questionnaire and watch the description of the incident on the TV in your room. Then, enjoy a meal made with seasonal ingredients, get hints from the staff, and look for clues throughout the hotel to complete an “arrest warrant.
Finally, submit the arrest warrant to the front desk when you check out. The staff will check to see if it matches their sheet containing the truth about the case. Can you discover the criminal safely? This your chance to show your strength as a detective!

Gifu Ork Hirugano: Feel like main character of a mystery novel at this overnight private lodge horror event!
Gifu Prefecture’s Ork Hirugano outdoor resort will be holding the one-night, two-day accommodation horror event “Inferno Lodge: People living in the Red Forest.”
When you visit the “Lodge Evergreen” private villa, you will immediately feel uncomfortable with the slightly creepy business owners and long-term guests. Then you’ll find a scribbled note in your lodge that reads, “Don't believe that family” ... Apparently, they’re a crazed group of Satanists who kill and sacrifice guests. As the mysterious ritual progresses, your mission is simply to escape the mountain depths with your life.
The most notable feature is that the story branches with differing results depending on your choice of words and actions. Your story will be experienced only by your particular lodge, and you’ll be greeted by a unique ending the next morning.
The horror is non-stop until the very end as you sneak through your lodge, and even includes an explosive ritual.
The entire Ork Hirugano lodge village is reserved for the event, which is a collaboration of haunted house producers Shochiku Obakeyahonpo and Honancho Obakeyashiki Obaken. One lodge is reserved for each participating group, and measures are taken to minimize interaction with strangers to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Inferno Lodge: People living in the Red Forest

• Prices: Lodge charter system limited to 14 buildings per day (minimum 1 guest to 10 maximum); 32,500 yen per person, 130,000 yen to 325,000 yen per lodge (tax included)

*Reservations can be made by individuals or parties that do not meet the minimum number of participants, but fees for minimum number must be paid.
