Discover the unique characteristics of Japanese accommodation types! Understanding the differences will make it easy to choose the perfect hotel or stay that suits your travel needs.
Business Hotels

Business hotels are commonly found in central areas and near tourist sites. These hotels are a standard choice for group tours. Rooms in business hotels, especially in central Tokyo, are typically compact but include cleaning and bed-making services. Convenience stores are often located nearby, emphasizing the hotels' key feature: convenience.
Ryokan (Japanese Style Inn)

These traditional inns feature a tasteful exterior and embody the elegance of Japanese culture. Guests are cared for by female staff known as nakai, who provide attentive, personalized service—a hallmark of omotenashi (Japanese hospitality). Guest rooms are intricately designed, often featuring tatami mats, with green tea and snacks prepared to enhance the authentic experience.
Meals and Bathing at a Ryokan

The pleasure of staying at a ryokan are the meals and baths. They serve mainly local dishes made with local seasonal ingredients. You can enjoy meals fully relaxed with high-quality hospitality. Also, most ryokan are equipped with a communal large bathroom or an open-air bath. You can wear the yukata, casual kimono, provided in your room to go to the bath.
Guest Houses

With fewer rooms than a ryokan, guest houses often have a simpler, more homely atmosphere. Typically family-run, they offer friendly and approachable service, making them a welcoming choice for travelers. Meals are a highlight, often prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients from nearby farmers and fishermen—drawing many guests specifically for the delicious, regional cuisine.
Capsule Hotels

Ideal for budget-conscious travelers, capsule hotels offer minimalist accommodations designed in the shape of capsules. Typically, the bed is the only private space, and most capsules do not have locks. However, many locations feature amenities such as 24-hour saunas or public baths nearby. Recently, capsule hotels have become increasingly popular with female travelers, with some facilities now offering women-only floors for added comfort.
