A Day in Tokyo With... Japanese Steve Jobs?!

Last updated: 7 May 2020

Do you know who Steve Jobs is?
He was one of the founders of an industry giant that has the familiar logo of an apple. He was a genius who revolutionized the world through technology. He was a charismatic business leader and a great person whose name will go down in history.

Sadly Steve Jobs passed away in 2011. But if he should come back to life and come to Japan in 2019...what would you like to show him?

Huh? It’s pointless to talk about “ifs”, isn’t it?

Not at all. It’s no problem at all. That’s because here in Japan we have this person.

RG Jobs goes to Harajuku

RG Jobs goes to Harajuku

Razor Ramon RG is a well-known impersonator of Steve Jobs.
As you can see, he comes across exactly as though he were Jobs!
This time we invited him to Harajuku, a part of town also popular with foreign visitors to Japan. We wanted to see what Steve Jobs’ take would be on Harajuku - the quintessence of pop culture - known throughout the world.

Takeshita-dori in front of the station is even crowded on weekdays.
Today, as in the past, Harajuku is always bustling with young people.

And then while watching the throngs of people coming and going, RG Jobs, immersed in deep feeling, lands in Harajuku and relishes the moment. This is the first place he heads to!

Spins, because when it comes down to it, this shop is the embodiment of Harajuku culture!

Spins is an apparel shop in Harajuku’s Takeshita-dori that handles a wide selection of casual items.
It always has the latest trending fashions in men’s and women’s wear and other sundries. You could say that today’s Harajuku culture is condensed in this shop.

Jobs also appears to be interested in Harajuku fashion and seems especially engrossed in a jersey imprinted with U.S.A.
“My home...the U.S.A.!” Said with a subtle smile. This is probably the way Japanese traveling abroad feel when they find goods having a Japanese flavor.

Jobs also seems to be attracted to the sunglasses.
He tries on several pairs... Finally settling on ones with an orange color.
“This is most like the U.S.A.” he thinks, but his real reason for visiting Spins is something else.

If Jobs came back to life I would really like to show him smartphone cases

If Jobs came back to life I would really like to show him smartphone cases

That’s right. I would really like him to see these smartphone cases!
Today everyone takes them for granted, but back in 2011 when Jobs was alive, smartphone cases did not exist. Never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined there would be such a rich selection of so many different types.

“Wow!...That’s amazing!...”

He would undoubtedly say.

Immediately RG Jobs asks the staff of Spins, “Which type of case is popular in Japan now?” He’s doing research.

“Marketing is really important for any market!”

Could it be that Jobs wants to market these cases as his own original...?!

He’s even more impressed by the smartphone ring which also did not exist when he was alive, “This is useful!” He exclaims.

In addition to that, seeing stickers and electrical cords he is unable to hide his surprise - “When did all these smartphone accessories come into the world...”

The three smartphone cases RG Jobs liked best!

But it seems that RG Jobs is most interested in cases.
“I really want to take one of these back to the Other Side,” he says as he closely scrutinizes a case he likes.
Since we are at it, here are the three best cases Jobs selected from all the many different types.

RG Jobs’ third favorite is a really cute heart-shaped rubber smartphone case (756 yen including tax).
The blue jewel set in the very center is impressive.
“This is very beautiful!” I didn’t expect him to select something this cute...

“Cool down and cool!” is what RG Jobs said is what attracted him to this case.
The blue gem in the middle of the red passionate heart is something that would help him cool down when his head became overloaded with ideas. He also said that the color combination was perfect and liked the design because he thought it was cool and reminded him of the expansive sky above.

His second choice was this impressive rose flower (1078 yen including tax).
At first glance this case stands out visually in a rather flashy way. It didn’t seem to fit Jobs’ image.

But, in a very firm voice he shouted, “I like rock n’ roll!” Now I understood why he liked it. (*It’s not clear whether the real Jobs liked rock or not)
Next he said, “Guns n’ Roses are the best!” Is it possible that he is mistaking this for an official Guns n’ Roses item....?!

And, it was the shiny, gold smart smartphone case (540 yen tax included) with a gold heart that he liked best.
Without a doubt it best seemed to fit his image.
Breaking into an impertinent smile he said, “Protect my smartphone!” And appeared most satisfied.
Really? It’s not as though it was made with real gold, but...

But even after he knew it was fake gold, RG Jobs never let go of that smartphone case.
“Metallic, hard, soft!”
In a way it did look hard but was soft to the touch and that must be why he liked it.

Jobs ended up buying all three!
The way to enjoy Harajuku culture is by first getting a smartphone case it seems.

Spins also has many other items in addition to smartphone cases!
Used items...

Super-cheap trending items, and the latest Harajuku fashion items you really want to have. According to one of the clerks in the shop, long T-shirts are now a hot-selling item! When you go shopping in Harajuku, be sure to stop by here!

What? It seems like RG Jobs is making an appointment. He seems to have become busy the moment he crossed over to This Side. He appears to be using the Guns’ rose pattern case.
I’ll show him another pop culture spot in Harajuku as soon as he finished his phone call.

More in the second part!

(*Please note that it is possible that the smartphone cases shown above may be sold out in which case different items will be displayed.)
