No battery? No problem! Top 5 Cafes in Shibuya Complete with Wi-Fi

Last updated: 23 April 2020

Shibuya is known for a lot of things. It’s known for being a place to play, it’s known for having great grammable spots. It’s one of the most visited places for both Japanese and foreign tourists. However, like all urban cities, it’s easy to lose track of your phone’s remaining power when you’re taking pictures or checking out your map app. When caught in such a pinch, one of the most common solutions is to visit a cafe outfitted with Wi-Fi and power outlets.

This time around, we’ll be introducing 5 cafes in Shibuya that not only embody the town’s reputation as a trendy location but are also complete with the right facilities for the wayward traveler. These cafes are great choices for businessman looking to do his work, digital nomads, or even students simply looking to take a break.

TOWER RECORDS CAFE Shibuya: For all the J-Music lovers out there, perfect for sharing right off the bat!

TOWER RECORDS CAFE Shibuya: For all the J-Music lovers out there, perfect for sharing right off the bat!

Tower Records is known for being the main propagator of Japan’s music industry, whose branch here is a symbol of Shibuya, standing out as a yellow building with bold red lettering.

On the second floor lies the “TOWER RECORDS CAFE Shibuya”, designed with the idea of a “360-degree entertainment store” in mind. Many Japanese artistes hold collaborations with this cafe, and as such it provides an experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else. The place also has plans to further develop its image as the center of Japan-specific culture.

Boasting a wide area for customers to relax and take their time, the cafe is popular with foreign tourists both alone or with their family. Not only is the place something easily postable on social media, it also provides Wi-Fi and to top it all off, 24 out of the 80 seats sport sockets for charging one’s gadgets (please be aware though that data may be restricted somewhat when many customers are present).

Other than the space and the facilities, the cafe’s menu is also one of its charms. From the loco moco bowl, omelet rice (omurice), and taco rice (1,000-yen each, tax inclusive) in their regular menu, they also offer seasonal dishes that usually are a result of a collaboration with an artiste.

Located near both Harajuku and Shibuya, the cafe is extremely accessible. Experience Japanese music culture in its entirety as you take your time sharing the various things that catch your interest.

*During collaboration periods, entry is only allowed for those who booked an advanced ticket or took a queue number from the counter.

FREEMAN CAFE: Perfect for the solo businessperson and groups of visitors

FREEMAN CAFE: Perfect for the solo businessperson and groups of visitors

Just around the corner of the Miyashita Park is the “FREEMAN CAFE”, boasting much legroom in a calm relaxing atmosphere. Of course, it also has the all-important power sockets and Wi-Fi. Their tables are wider than most cafes, so they’re often used on weekdays by businessman for their dealings, and on weekends couples or friends. Recently they’ve also been receiving a lot of more foreign visitors.

The cafe aims to provide a space that’s neither work nor home, a third space so to speak, where you can stimulate all 5 senses, giving the place a coziness like no other.

With 40 out of their 96 total seats having power points available, the cafe is popular with visitors seeking to charge and peruse their gadgets. The Wi-Fi’s password is displayed on each table and one simply need to key that in to connect to the Wi-Fi (users may experience lag when servers are overloaded).

Starting from their colorful single-plate dishes, their menu is both a feast for the eyes and in the more literal sense of the phrase. Photogenic and delicious, their “FMC Avocado Cheese Burger with Hasselback Potatoes” is our biggest recommendation (1,450-yen, tax exclusive).

The place is especially convenient during bad weather as it is right in front of exit 13 of the Shibuya station’s underground passage. Take a seat and watch the crowds through the glass wall overseeing the streets of Shibuya.

café 1886 at Bosch: Germany’s famous Bosch cafe, a resort with a passion for quality

café 1886 at Bosch: Germany’s famous Bosch cafe, a resort with a passion for quality

You might be familiar with the auto parts maker Bosch, with over 130 years of experience in the industry. The “café 1886 at Bosch” is the brand’s first step into the café business. Let loose and take it easy at this Platz as you meet new people.

The seats in the establishment comprise of 71 table and counter seats in addition to 12 terrace seats. Power outlets are available at 26 of the counter and table seats (free of charge). Sign up with your email to enjoy 60 minutes of free Wi-Fi, up to 4 times per day.

While many businesspersons visit the cafe in the afternoon for dealings, the mornings are often quieter, which makes it the perfect occasion to rest and relax.

Their menu is also well put together, with sandwiches made by chefs from the famous French restaurant in Ginza “Mardi Gras”, as well as their original blend coffee “Tobira Coffee”, to even the German sandwich “Slava” (850-yen, tax inclusive) which they make with sausages imported directly from the country. Their dark roast coffee (400-yen, tax inclusive) is also one of our recommendations.

Space is also not an issue here, with high ceilings and large open windows. The furniture choice is also well-considered, giving the place a unique charm that will make you gush on and on with your friends as you lose track of time.

Cafe Mame-Hico: Get away from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya

Cafe Mame-Hico: Get away from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya

Enjoy classic Japanese legume and great coffee at this cafe. The cafe’s unique namesake comes from a wordplay of the Japanese words for coffee and beans, with a reputation for providing peace and quiet with a single cup of coffee within boisterous Shibuya.

The establishment emphasizes on comfort, down to the fine details. The furniture is all custom-made to fit the cafe’s theme, using pure broadleaf tree wood.

The cutlery as well is imported from leading brands from around the globe, and while the Wi-Fi is free (requires logging in), power outlet usage is chargeable for 500-yen for 3 hours. If intending to use it, please approach the staff and make a request. 40 out of the 60 seats available come with power outlets.

The coffee is always freshly brewed and served, while the ingredients for the other items on the menu are chosen with care. Their round bread (572-yen, tax inclusive), baked daily, is just one of their famed dishes advertised on their signboard. We recommend adding on the dainagon azuki beans and salted butter (248-yen each, tax inclusive). Order a dark roast coffee (756-yen, tax inclusive) to make it a set and have your heart and stomach filled to the brim.

Pay a visit to this cafe on the second floor of the building and spend your time coolly without clamor as you watch the streets below, a different side to Shibuya that one would normally not know of. Why not take a break here immersed in hospitality as you look up your next destination?
