SATO-IRO is a portmanteau of two Japanese concepts. The word satoyama represents the meaning of "countryside," and junin toiro signifies that each person has their own unique characteristics.

In developing each itinerary, SATO-IRO staff personally visited each location, explored their unique attractions, and carefully selected recommended activities for you to enjoy. These model plans are packed with delightful countryside experiences that you won't find in other guidebooks.

One such road trip itinerary takes you to the beautiful mountains and waterfalls in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. The trek up Mt. Hinatayama is invigorating, and at the summit, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view. The beautiful white-granite mountaintop looks just like a sandy beach.

The Ojiragawa Valley is another enticing destination for the adventurous soul. Embark on a refreshing journey across suspension bridges and past beautiful waterfalls, starting with the enchanting Sengafuchi Falls.
In addition to the intermediate route exploring Mt. Hinatayama and Ojiragawa Valley for about 6 hours, there's a beginner's option featuring Mt. Meshimori and Doryu Falls lasting approximately 3 hours, as well as a hiking trail to Mt. Utsukushimori and Makiba Park with a similar duration. You can choose a route that suits your skill level.

SATO-IRO has also uncovered some lesser-known treasures, including eateries serving up delectable dishes, retail stores stocked with local produce and wines, and exclusive activities that are only available in the region.

Each travel plan includes activities that are truly unique to the region. Of course, bringing all the required equipment to Japan would be a huge hassle. Luckily, most of the essential gear can be provided for you, so there's no need to lug around heavy baggage.

For instance, when you stay at ist - Aokinodaira Field in Kawakami Village, Nagano Prefecture, you'll find that essential items like tents, bedding, and cooking utensils are already provided. In other words, you can fully immerse in your trip without worrying about preparation.

SATO-IRO also offers packages that include car rental services. You can pick up a comfortable, well-kitted rental car with features like navigation systems and premium car audio either at their Tokyo headquarters near Yukigaya-Otsuka Station or at JR Gotanda Station. (Rental car pickup and drop-off at your hotel can also be negotiated.) Having a car at your disposal gives you a whole new level of freedom and makes your adventures through the Japanese countryside even more enjoyable.

10:00 AM: Car Rental Pickup
Begin your day by picking up your rental car in Tokyo and hit the road towards the picturesque campsite nestled in Nagano Prefecture. Since your vehicle is equipped with an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) card, you can pay tolls automatically without stopping. And if the skies are clear, keep an eye out because you might just be treated to a breathtaking glimpse of the iconic Mt. Fuji on the horizon! Without traffic, you can reach Nagasaka IC in around 2 hours and 30 minutes.

12:30: Lunch at Bakery x Kitchen PUT
For lunch, be sure to try the delectable bread from the Kunopan bakery. Their hamburgers, in particular, are exceptional. Lunch hours are from 10 AM to 4 PM, and the shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

1 PM: Shopping at HIMAWARI-ICHIBA Market

After lunch, head over to the HIMAWARI-ICHIBA market to pick up food and beverages for dinner and the next day's lunch. HIMAWARI-ICHIBA offers a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and fish. And don’t miss their selection of Yamanashi Prefecture wines, perfect for complementing your dinner.
For those with a penchant for imported wines, Wine Shop Soif is recommended. They have an extensive collection of carefully selected natural wines that are sure to intrigue your palate. Please note that they are closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

2 PM: Enjoy the Picturesque Yatsugatake Kogen Ohashi Great Bridge

On your way to the campsite, take a short detour to the Yatsugatake Kogen Ohashi Great Bridge to enjoy the breathtaking views. From the center of the bridge, you can admire the Yatsugatake Mountains to the north, the Southern Alps to the southwest, and Mt. Fuji to the south.

3 PM: Arrival at ist - Aokinodaira Field

Arrive at ist - Aokinodaira Field, a campsite in Kawakami Village, Nagano Prefecture, situated at the eastern foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains. Here, you’ll find a variety of campsites designed to make the most of the diverse terrain along the valley, with the source of the Chikuma River flowing nearby. As night descends, be sure to gaze upwards and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring canvas of the starry night sky.

While you are welcome to set up your tent on your own, you can also choose a tent setup assistance service, allowing you to save both effort and time.

And since you’re in Japan, why not try making your own Japanese dinner? We wholeheartedly recommend experimenting with local delicacies like "hoto" or "toji soba." Prior to your shopping excursion at HIMAWARI-ICHIBA, make a checklist of the essential ingredients to ensure you have everything needed to whip up these authentic dishes.

“Hoto” is a quintessential local delicacy from Yamanashi Prefecture. This delectable dish consists of flat, hand-cut Udon noodles known as “hotomen,” simmered in a hearty miso-based broth with a generous assortment of ingredients. Fascinatingly, hoto has been a beloved culinary tradition for over a millennium, its roots tracing back to the Heian period (794-1185).

“Toji soba” is a time-honored local delicacy from Nagano Prefecture. Its distinctive preparation involves placing thinly sliced soba noodles into a woven bamboo basket known as a “toji kago.” These noodles are then lightly simmered in the broth before being served in a bowl. Toji soba was created as a way to enjoy soba noodles during the colder months.

7:30 AM: Healthy Breakfast

Start your day with breakfast at the cafe in the administration building. You can savor original hand-roasted coffee and a breakfast plate featuring seasonal, organic, and pesticide-free vegetables.

8:30 AM: Check Out and Gear Up for Hiking

Check out from the campsite and head towards the mountains and waterfalls in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. The drive from the campsite to the Ojiragawa Valley parking lot is around 1 hour.

9:30 AM: Hike up Mt. Hinatayama

Begin your trek up Mt. Hinatayama from the trailhead near the Ojiragawa Valley parking lot. Remember to fill out the hiking registration form at the trailhead before beginning your journey. The summit sits at an elevation of approximately 890 meters above sea level. The climb takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the descent takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes.

The peak of Mt. Hinatayama is topped with weathered white granite gravel that looks just like the sandy shores of a beach. Enjoy your lunch while taking in the magnificent view of the sprawling Yatsugatake Mountains.

12:30 PM: Descend & Discover Kai Komagatake Jinjya Shrine and Ojiragawa Valley

As you start your descent down Mt. Hinatayama, you'll come across the Kai Komagatake Jinja Shrine, built around 270 years ago. You can pay a visit to this lovely shrine before continuing your journey downhill.

The Ojiragawa Valley, selected as one of Japan's "remarkable waters," is another must-visit spot. Here, you can see the pristine Ojiragawa River that originates from the Southern Alps and Mt. Kaikoma-gatake. You'll have the chance to witness breathtaking landscapes, including the sparkling emerald-green Sengafuchi Falls and more.
If you have some extra time, stop by the Kai-Oizumi Onsen Panorama-no-Yu hot springs. It's the perfect spot to unwind and soothe your tired body in the hot springs after your hike.

3 PM: Depart from Ojiragawa Valley Parking Lot & Conclude Your Trip

Head out from the Ojiragawa Valley parking lot and begin your journey back to Tokyo. Remember to drive safely on your way back. Return the rental car with a full tank by 6 PM, and your trip to the Japanese countryside comes to a close.
