As GREEN×EXPO 2027 prepares to open in Yokohama in March 2027, JR East is launching specially decorated Shinkansen trains featuring the Expo's official mascot, Tunku Tunku, and GREEN×EXPO 2027 designs.
Running across eastern Japan, these limited-time trains are part of the countdown to one of Japan's biggest events of 2027. This guide covers where and when to spot the GREEN×EXPO 2027 Shinkansen, how to reach the Expo venue in Yokohama, and historical and cultural attractions to explore around Yokohama and Kamakura during your trip.
GREEN×EXPO 2027-Themed Shinkansen Hits the Rails
With GREEN×EXPO 2027 reaching the six-month countdown to opening on September 19, 2026, JR East and the Japan Association for the International Horticultural Expo 2027 are teaming up to operate specially decorated Shinkansen trains.
The trains feature designs inspired by GREEN×EXPO 2027, including its official mascot, Tunku Tunku, helping build excitement for the Expo as they travel across eastern Japan. Service is scheduled to begin on September 16, 2026.
Routes and Train Overview
Tohoku & Hokkaido Shinkansen: E5 Series
・Train: One 10-car E5 Series train
・Main services: Hayabusa, Hayate, Yamabiko, Nasuno
・Operating section: Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto
Joetsu & Hokuriku Shinkansen: E7 Series
・Train: One 12-car E7 Series train
・Main services: Kagayaki, Hakutaka, Asama, Toki, Tanigawa
・Operating sections: Tokyo to Niigata; Tokyo to Tsuruga
Operating period: September 16, 2026 to around mid-September 2027
The special designs will appear on one E5 Series train and one E7 Series train, so not every service listed above will use a GREEN×EXPO 2027-themed train.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 Event Overview

・Location: Former Kamiseya Communications Facility, Yokohama, Kanagawa
・Theme: Scenery of the Future for Happiness
GREEN×EXPO 2027, officially the International Horticultural Expo 2027, Yokohama, Japan, will transform a roughly 100-hectare site in Yokohama's Kamiseya area into an international showcase centered on flowers, greenery, nature, food, and sustainable ways of living.
How to Get to the GREEN×EXPO 2027 Venue
From Shin-Yokohama Station
Shin-Yokohama is a major gateway for travelers arriving on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Direct bus services from major transport hubs including Shin-Yokohama are planned for GREEN×EXPO 2027.
Alternatively, travelers can use Yokohama's rail network to reach one of the stations serving as gateways to the Expo area before transferring to a shuttle bus.
From Tokyo or Shinagawa Station
Take the JR Tokaido Line or Yokosuka Line to Yokohama Station, then transfer to the Sotetsu Line toward the Expo area. Direct buses from major terminals, including Yokohama Station, are also planned.
According to the Expo's current transportation plan, shuttle buses are expected to operate from Seya, Mitsukyo, Minami-machida Grandberry Park, and Tokaichiba stations, with direct buses also planned from major terminals such as Yokohama and Shin-Yokohama. Transportation details may be updated closer to the event, so check the official GREEN×EXPO 2027 website before traveling.
