Naritasan Shinshoji is a Buddhist temple that boasts the highest number of worshippers in the country. Being close to Narita Airport, it is also a popular spot visited by many tourists. Souvenir shops and gourmet spots line Naritasan-Omotesando street from the JR/Keisei Electric Railway Narita Station to Shinshoji Temple.
Today, we would like to recommend the best gourmet spots to stop for a bite while taking a walk around. From quick lunch spots to stylish cafes where you can unwind for a break, here are some of our favorite picks along the way to Shinshoji Temple.
■HASHIRA DELI & CAFE: Cute Latte Art to Accompany You On Your Trip!
Only a minute away on foot from the JR Narita Station East Exit stands Hashira Deli & Cafe, an old-fashioned coffee shop where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and other cafe menu items. Formerly a soba noodle shop run by the grandmother of the current owner, it has been made into a relaxing cafe where everyone can unwind.
This Japanese-style shop has wooden tables and chairs, and raised tatami seats, making a relaxed (and relaxing) atmosphere. Many tourists visit, especially in the mornings.
You can order toast and granola for breakfast (7:30~11:00AM), and for lunch you can get a rice set, scone set, or soup (from 11:00AM). There is also a large selection of dessert items, such as original cheesecake and chiffon cake, which may vary by season.
Drinks and deli items can also be ordered as take-out. While Japanese customers tend to prefer eating in, many tourists from abroad are used to eating on the go, so it is flexible for visitors to be able to choose. There are also English menus and English-speaking staff available.
This is the S size Matcha Latte (380 yen, tax included). It combines the smooth, sweet taste of green tea and milk. The Cafe Latte (380 yen, tax included) is also decorated with cute latte art!
We recommend trying the muffins and scones for a snack. The photo shows the O-shokuji Scone Curry-Cheese Flavor (230 yen, tax included). If you order as take-out, you will get it in a special paper bag. There are many kinds of muffins and scones available depending on the day, so please check out your favorite flavors as you enjoy your trip.

■KINTOKI NO AMATARO: Masterfully Made Anko, Special Beans and Sticky Dough
Kintoki no Amataro is the popular Naritasan-Omotesando branch of the famous Amataro Yaki shop. It is a long-established shop, standing for almost 70 years. The foods at Amataro-Yaki are similar to your average imagawa-yaki and oban-yaki, however these are made with a special process and ingredients unique to this shop.
There are two different menu items, Shiro-an and Adzuki-an, at 120 yen each (tax included).
The adzuki and otebo beans used to make this anko paste are the basics of the basic, and said to come from the suburbs of Obihiro City and Kita-Memurocho, Hokkaido. They are made completely by hand daily - no machine use whatsoever - and can take up to 7 hours to complete the entire process!
Of course, the dough itself is also handmade. The selected materials are baked slowly via an iron plate. You can watch them being baked at the front of the shop, while the sweet scent wafting around stimulates your appetite even more.
Here it is, baked to perfection. It is served in a paper making it easy to eat while walking around. Amataro-yaki is loved by tourists and locals alike. On the day of our visit, we saw firsthand just how many people gathered here to buy their own take-out items.
On the left of the photo is the Adzuki-an, and the Shiro-an is pictured on the right. Freshly baked, you can enjoy the crisp skin on the outside and the soft texture of the inside. Both are delicious and sweet, and sure to ease to your body of exhaustion from walking.
A cheerful staff member will always greet you at Kintoki no Amataro. You will enjoy speaking with the shop staff, as some can speak foreign languages as well.

Naritasando Fusa no Eki is a shop that sells ideal souvenir and gift items from Chiba. Inside the shop is a rest area with a garden, as well as a local Chiba eat-in menu, including Chiba’s local specialty “Matsuri Sushi” which is made in the on-site kitchen, bento boxes, freshly baked bread, a variety of drinks, handmade sweets, and more.
Recommended as a grab-and-go snack to enjoy on your walk are the “Enjoy Peanuts,” which are sweet, crispy, Chiba peanuts coated in a variety of flavors.
There are 12 flavors available at Naritasando Fusa no Eki. The most popular options are Strawberry and Chocolate, but many foreign tourists also enjoy Green Tea and Wasabi Soy Sauce.
Though you can buy these “Enjoy Peanuts” individually by flavor, the top recommendation is to buy them by the cup. Choose your favorite of the 12 available flavors, and fill the cup with as many as you can until you can just close the lid. It is available for 500 yen (tax not included).
We would also like to recommend the limited summer item “Strawberry King” during the summertime (500 yen, tax not included). This item is ice cream at its perfection, made with whole strawberries straight from the company’s own farm, “Fusa no Eki Ranch,” shaved ice, and condensed milk. You can enjoy the fresh taste and aroma of Japanese strawberries, direct from the source.

■SHIMODA KOSEIDO PANCHAYA: Popular Unagi-pan and Flavorful Koppe-pan
Shimoda Koseido PanChaya is a bakery located near the center of Naritasan Omotesndo. This shop is famous for its Unagi-pan (eel bread) and Koppe-pan (bread rolls) that you can buy and enjoy right on the spot.
There are a variety of lunchtime options available including drinks, breads, and salads, as well as the Omakase Lunch set (615 yen, tax included).
Aside from take-out items, you can also buy and eat your lunch in-store. There is also a temporary luggage storage space available for a small fee, so it’s a nice spot to stop by for a break during your walk. (Luggage fee is 600 yen per item, tax included).
This is the Unagi-pan (615 yen, tax included). Shimoda Koseido was originally a long-established eel shop. It has a famous menu that has even been featured in many forms of media, including on TV.
Here is how it looks from the inside when broken in half. It is a rare kind of stuffed bread filled with Narita specialty ingredients such as grilled eel and teppozuke, or Japanese pickles. The secret is to eat it while it is still warm and even more delicious. You may want to ask to have them heated up before you grab and go to enjoy on your walk.
We also recommend choosing your favorite flavor of Koppe-pan bread rolls. You can choose from a huge variety of additional toppings as well, such as red-bean butter, strawberry jam, chocolate cream, peanut cream, matcha-an and whipped cream, banana-caramel whip, egg salad, potato salad, tuna salad, ham & tomato, and ham & cheese (cheddar)!
This is the #1 popular item, “An Butter” (red-bean butter), 260 yen, tax included. The smoothness of the chilled, anko filling and the texture of the soft, fluffy bread creates the perfect marriage of Western and Japanese flavors in the mouth.
In this photo is the Peanut Cream (310 yen, tax included), which is mildly sweet, yet very delicious. The cream contains coarse peanut grains, adding texture to a deliciously satisfying gem of an item.
The Koppe-pan is served in plastic bags which are perfect for eating on the go. The menu is also available in English, so be sure to check for your favorite flavors and order as you please!

■NARITA YUME BOKUJO MONZEN BRANCH: Specialty Gelato from Unpasteurized Dairy
Narita Yume Bokujo (or Narita Dream Dairy Farm), is a tourist ranch located in Narita City, Chiba, that has been serving specialty dairy products since 1869. The Narita Yume Bokujo Monzen branch is one of the directly managed shops, and a specialty gelato place located only 2 minutes on foot from the main gate of Shinshoji Temple.
An expansive gelato image on the signboard marks the storefront of the shop. The number of people ordering soft cream here after their visit to Shinshoji Temple on the day of our visit was quite impressive!
Both the gelato and soft cream are popular items here, and both use unpasteurized milk as their base, providing the delicious flavor of Narita Yume Bokujo’s specialty dairy products. You can choose between a cup or a cone, yet many tourists find the cup to be most convenient for eating on the go, especially on hot days when it tends to melt quickly.
The gelato is available in several flavors. The seasonal flavors are particular popular, with a menu that changes every month. There is a wide variety of options to choose from, including regular favorites such as strawberry and milk chocolate, which are popular with children, and other unique flavors such as cream cheese and pumpkin, which tend to be favorable with adults.

This photo shows the Gelato Double Ice (520 yen, tax included). We went with the tourist favorite, a matcha and milk combo. The gelato is tightly packed all the way to the bottom of the cone, and delicious to eat. The mild bitterness of the matcha creates a perfect harmony with the strong flavor of the milk! A delicious work of art that allows you to fully enjoy its natural sweetness.
Additionally, you can also purchase dairy products such as milk and yogurt here. The photo shows the Small Milk Bottle (190 yen, tax included). You can buy it and drink it on the spot. Why not come try Narita Yume Bokujo‘s specialty dairy products of for yourself?
