Enoshima Lanterns is a summer light event that aims to promote the local area and showcase the beauty and charm of Enoshima Island.

The event is based on the legend of Enoshima Engi, which tells the story of how Enoshima Island was born. According to the legend, the goddess Benzaiten descended from heaven. The wicked five-headed dragon Gozuryu witnessed Benzaiten's arrival and instantly fell in love with her. He proposed marriage but she insisted that he help the people of Koshigoe. Gozuryu agreed and dedicated himself to protecting the area. Recognizing his good intentions, Benzaiten and Gozuryu jointly safeguarded Koshigoe, leading to its prosperity.

The event features lanterns that depict scenes from this legend, as well as other motifs that evoke the summer season, such as goldfish, morning glories, and fireworks.

Inspired by the origin story of Enoshima as told in the Enoshima Engi, the Enoshima Lanterns evolve each year with fresh artistic expression. For 2025, the theme is “Living Radiance.”

The first phase launches on July 19, transforming the area around Zuishinmon Gate with intricate paper-cut light projections and ambient sounds that evoke the refreshing cool of a summer evening. This year, a new motif—the Summer Evening Moon—adds a serene and seasonal glow to the display.

The second phase begins on July 27. Visitors ascending the illuminated stone steps, symbolizing a path of light, will reach Hetsunomiya, where shell wind chimes gently ring beneath woven reed screens. Flowing fabrics, reminiscent of celestial robes, will display ukiyo-e-style imagery set on Enoshima, creating an immersive world that honors the island’s heritage.

For the first time, the installation extends to the Samuel Cocking Garden at the summit of Enoshima. Here, vibrant lights bring the natural surroundings to life, while a dazzling new lantern display evokes a dreamlike atmosphere. Open for the duration of the event, it’s the perfect destination for a leisurely evening stroll beneath the Sea Candle.

Enoshima Lanterns 2025 will be held from July 19 to August 31, 2025. The event will take place on Enoshima Island, which is accessible by a bridge from the mainland. The event area covers the Enoshima Shrine, Nakamise Street, and other spots around the island. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
