쇼무 천황이 이곳의 당탑을 건립했다고 전해진다. 가마쿠라 시대에 지어진 우아한 누문(국보)이 옛 큰길에 면하여 세워져 있으며, 경내 중앙에는 가마쿠라 시대의 13층 석탑(중요문화재)이 자리하고 있다. 코스모스 명소로도 유명하다.

1621년, 기슈 번주 도쿠가와 요리노부(徳川頼宣) 공이 아버지 이에야스(家康) 공을 모시기 위하여 창건한 곤겐즈쿠리 양식의 신사. 닛코 도쇼구와 마찬가지로 현란하고 호화로운 건물 주변에는 히다리 진고로(左甚五郎)의 조각 작품과 가노 단유(狩野探幽)의 벽화가 자리하고 있다. 주홍색 누문을 비롯한 배전, 본전 등 7동이 국가 중요 문화재로 지정되어 있다. 와카마쓰리 행사 중 하나인 미코시토교(가마 행렬)에서는 가마를 짊어진 청년들이 108계단을 힘차게 발맞춰 내려가는데 1000명의 행렬이 그 뒤를 따른다.

에도 시대 초기, 1615년에 창업한 이래 400년 이상 14대에 걸쳐 가게를 계승해오고 있다. 일본에서 가장 오랜 전통을 지녔다고 일컬어지는 면포상이다. 항상 200종 이상을 구비하고 있는 데누구이(전통 무명 수건)는 쇼와 시대 초기의 무늬를 복원하거나 현재의 당주인 14대 호소쓰지 이헤에(細辻伊兵衛)가 새 무늬를 발표하는 등 다채로운 상품들을 갖추고 있다. 2층에는 옛 데누구이를 전시하는 '저자거리 데누구이 갤러리'(무료 입장)가 병설되어 있다.
