MUJI is a popular shop offering a wide variety of products ranging from rice crackers and sweets, to daily necessities and clothing. In April 2019, MUJI Ginza, the world's largest MUJI, opened its doors in Ginza, Tokyo.
MUJI is very popular not only in Japan but also overseas. As of 2019, it had more than 500 stores worldwide. Among the many products, what kind of MUJI products are appealing to visitors from abroad?
This time, we carefully selected the most popular items for foreigners at MUJI Ginza, and also asked what they felt was particularly impressive about each item. (The following is respondents' personal opinions.)
Store that cooperated with the interview: “MUJI Ginza”
The Ginza store, which opened in April 2019, is the largest in the world. It includes MUJI HOTEL GINZA, a first in Japan. Ginza is a popular sightseeing spot for foreigners visiting Japan, and this shop in particular is a popular destination.
MUJI Diner is located on the first basement floor and the food floor on the first floor sells not only ordinary food, but also vegetables and bento boxes, plus breads and juices. There is also a tea blending workshop.
Plenty of displays can be found on each floor. There is no doubt that you will be surprised by the assortment of items as you wander around the shop. The entire building is filled with MUJI products, making it a place where you can fully experience its worldview.
At MUJI Ginza, where you can see tourists from around the world lined up before the opening, let's take a look at the popular products!
1. Very satisfied with the high quality! Popular product "White chocolate dipped strawberry" (290 yen / tax included)
"MUJI's chocolate dipped strawberries are so delicious! It contains real strawberries! I don't feel there is this kind of high-quality sweet in China (laughs)." (China / 20s / female)
One of the most popular MUJI sweets: freeze-dried strawberries dipped in luxurious chocolate. In particular, it seems to be an overwhelmingly popular product with Chinese and Asian customers.
There are four types of chocolate: normal chocolate, white chocolate, matcha chocolate, and strawberry chocolate. The most popular No. 1 is “white chocolate strawberry”. The most popular among foreigners is Matcha Chocolate Strawberry.
"For Chinese, one of the main souvenirs they want to buy in Japan and share with people back home are matcha sweets." After all, matcha-flavored sweets are a great souvenir unique to Japan!
2. "Japanese lolly with plum" - truly Japanese (190 yen / tax included)
"Japanese sweets are often bought as souvenirs. There are a lot of interesting things that I haven't seen, so it's fun to choose something fun and share with everyone back home! The plum sweets are also very Japanese, and quite cheap too." (USA / 20s / woman)
In the "lolly" series, which is based around sweets Japanese would consider to be nostalgic, this particular product using Japanese plums is often bought by foreigners in bulk. It uses the famous and high-quality plum variety, Nanko Ume. The sweetness of the candy and the sweet and sour taste of the plum are well-balanced. At first glance, a beautiful appearance like a jewel may be attractive.
3. Various types of rice crackers (250 yen / tax included)
"Senbei rice crackers are also a snack that seems unique to Japan. They also have unusual flavors, such as black pepper and cheese and basil. They're tasty and a treat everyone will love." (US / 20s / woman)
Senbei are a typical Japanese snack. In addition to the classic soy sauce flavor, there is also a variety of others: shrimp, black pepper, cheese and basil. The package size is popular, and foreigners often buy them in bulk. Please enjoy the different tastes and textures that are offered!
4. Strong cost-performance! "Portable eyelash curler" (390 yen/tax included)
"This compactness is amazing! There are lots of cosmetics in Korea, but there are a lot of useful makeup products like this in Japan. There are MUJI products in Korea as well, but Japan is still cheaper and seems to be a great souvenir. "(Korea / 20s / female)
Have a look! It's this compact!
Of course it is foldable and easy to carry, but this item, which raises the eyelashes firmly, is also affordable at 390 yen. It is said that especially in Asia, this product has gone viral. Wouldn't it be a really nice souvenir - even if a practical one - for friends? It seems that MUJI employees also love it.
5. "Portable Aroma Diffuser" for creating a comfortable space anytime, anywhere (3,990 yen / tax included)
"I use a large MUJI aroma diffuser. It was originally owned by my wife and the design is simple and nice. It's portable and it's great to use when traveling! I can enjoy relaxing." (German / 40s / male)
One of MUJI's popular products, this one in particular is very convenient: as it's USB-compatible and contains an internal battery, it can be used anywhere in the world, regardless of the voltage or plug type.
With this, you can always relax with your favorite scent. Especially, it seems that essential oils with Japanese fragrance such as Hinoki and Yuzu are popular among travelers. At the time of the interview, there was a tourist who placed it in his hand and examined it really carefully. Because it is palm-sized and compact, it is likely to become a travel necessity.
6. Easy to use, every day! "Shower brush" (990 yen / tax included)
"In China, people often shower instead of having a bath. Japanese products are great quality, so daily bath products make great souvenirs!" (China) / 30s / male)
The bath brush has a long handle with a groove that makes it easy to grasp and use, making it easy to reach the back, and firm bristles that make it effective. Compared with a brush with a wooden handle, it is likely to last a long time. Especially in China, not only home appliances but also Japanese brand products seem to have a good reputation, and everyday products that are durable make popular purchases.
7. Outstanding ease-of-use stationery "correction tape / tape glue" (250 yen / tax each)
"Japan has a lot of really useful stationery products! Everyone takes it for granted, but I think these in particular are very high quality! It's very convenient and kind of a revolutionary idea, pasting correction tape instead of the fluid." (Philippines / 20s / woman)
"I have a lot of MUJI stationery products because they are simple and easy to use! I use them a lot at work." (USA / 20s / woman)
Japanese stationery itself is popular overseas due to its novel functionality and stylish, cute, high quality features, but these two items are particularly popular recently, especially in Asia. Both seem to be popular because the tape can be wound smoothly, firmly set on the paper and easy to use. Both are compact sizes that are easy to store and carry, and can easily fit in small pen cases.
