The open-air bath is a log carved out of a 1,650-year-old redwood tree with a diameter of 3.2 meters, which is now considered a natural monument. Redwoods are the largest trees in the world, over 100 meters tall, and in America they have long been loved by many people as "divine trees." Treated as a natural monument, they were not allowed to be cut down, and at the time, cutting was prohibited except for trees that had fallen due to wind (now, both cutting and transporting are completely prohibited). In the 1980s, Mr. Kamakura, who would later become the owner of the inn, gathered local lumberjacks, hunters, and other people who knew about forests and organized a search party.
