The National Museum of Western Art is the only national art museum devoted to a wide range of Western art. The core of the museum is the Matsukata Collection, a French art collection that is mainly comprised of Impressionist paintings and Rodin's sculptures. The building itself is of historical value and is one of the attractions in addition to the art collection. The main building was designed by the renowned 20th-century French architect, Le Corbusier, and was designated as an Important Cultural Property (architecture) in 2007. In the museum's permanent collection are approximately 5,500 works, including Western paintings from the late medieval period through the beginning of the 20th century and modern French sculptures, such as Rodin's, are displayed throughout the year.

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum opened in 1926 as the first public museum in Japan. A 7-minute walk from the park exit of JR Ueno Station, it is in Ueno Park, which also houses a zoo, a historical museum, a science museum, as well as a number of other art museums. Near 300 exhibitions are held every year, including a variety of planned exhibitions, exhibitions in cooperation with art organizations, exhibitions of groups of works by the general public, and special exhibitions where you can enjoy famous paintings from both Japan and overseas. The museum is also involved in an undertaking called the Art Communication Programs, which hosts various workshops as well as programs for art appreciation. Aiming to act as a “Doorway to Art,” the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum can be enjoyed by people of all ages. There are cafes and restaurants in the building where you can not only take a rest but also enjoy a full and proper meal. Designed by the grandmaster Japanese modernist architect Kunio Maekawa, even the building by itself is an attractions.

A museum located in the Ueno-onshi-koen Park. It opened in April 1972 and is run by the Japan Art Association. It displays a wide range of artworks including Important Cultural Properties. Although this museum does not have a permanent collection, it does hold creative exhibitions on a regular basis, such as the yearly modern art exhibition (VOCA) sponsored by the Museum, as well as publicly-sponsored exhibitions (the Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition and the Japanese Nature Painting Exhibition). There is a cafe in the building where you can enjoy seasonal views from large windows, as well as a museum shop selling original goods.

This museum showcases the works of a leading Japanese painter in the Taisho period, Yumeji Takehisa. It was founded in November 1990 by a lawyer Takumi Kano and houses approximately 3,300 items including Nihonga (Japanese style painting), oil paintings, original drawings, print works, books written by Takehisa, his belongings and the related documents. About 200 to 250 works selected from the collection are regularly displayed. The museum shop selling postcards and posters and Yumeji Café Minatoya are also available in the premises. Along with the Yayoi Museum in the premises, you can spend a day to appreciate art works.

The Yayoi museum was founded on June 1984 by the lawyer Takumi Kano. Inside the building is a collection of a total of 27,000 works including circa 3,000 works of Takabatake Kasho who swept through the art publication world from the late Meiji period (1868 - 1912) to the postwar era and the works and material other illustrators who were active around the same time. The theme of the permanent exhibition room on the 3rd floor is periodically changed with 50 different works of Takabatake. In the exhibition rooms at the first and the second floors, exhibitions under the publicational art theme like illustrations, magazines, manga and magazine appendices of the illustrators who were active in the late Meiji period to the postwar period are shown. The ”Takehisa Yumeji Museum” is also in the same building so the fact that you can enjoy two museums in one makes it very appealing.

This museum is a 10-minute walk from both the Ueno Park Exit of JR Ueno Station and Nezu Station on the Chiyoda Subway Line. A Taito-ku Circulation Bus is also available to visit the University Art Museum-Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. The museum was established by taking an advantage of its position at an art university. The collection consists of about 29,000 pieces including 22 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, making it one of the greatest collections in Japan. It includes many works created by top artists who graduated from the university and those are a very important collection on learning about Japanese modern art history. Some of the collections are open to public at the Geidai Collection exhibition which is held once or twice a year. There are also various regularly displays. The main building has a cafeteria, souvenir shop, and store selling painting supplies. Besides the main building, there are Chinretsukan Gallery and Masaki Memorial Gallery are open to the public during exhibitions (including the main building, all of them will be closed except for the period of exhibitions).
