Tsukuda-Ohashi Bridge

This was the first bridge built over the Sumida River after World War II. It was built in 1964 to ease traffic at the Kachidoki-bashi bridge downstream. Until then a method of transport called ”watashi” had been mainly used; with the completion of this bridge, the last ferry landing on the Sumida River, the over 300-year-old Tsukuda no Watashi, was abolished. Tsukuda-ohashi bridge was named after that ferry landing. In those days, there was a river called the Tsukuda running between Tsukudashima and Tsukishima islands; with the construction of the Tsukuda-ohashi bridge, the river was reclaimed, and the islands became joined. At the parapet of the bridge is a relief sculpture detailing the origins of the Tsukuda-ohashi bridge. A three-minute walk from Tsukishima Station on the Toei Subway Oedo Line or Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line.
