The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo National Film Center

東京国立近代美術館フィルムセンター

Description

The National Film Center at the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art is devoted to collecting, storing, and restoring movies and films, as well as their related materials. The center houses Japanese movie films from the very early days, particularly ”Momiji-gari,” which filmed a kabuki theater performed by the 9th Danjuro Ichilawa and the 5th Kikugoro Onoe; ”Shigeki Nanko Ketsubetsu” is a collection of Matsunosuke Onoe’s live stage performances, which the Prince Regent (later Emperor Showa) viewed in 1921; and ”The Funeral of Kobayashi Tomijiro,” which recorded the funeral for the founder of the Lion Corporation, which is known for its toothpaste. These three are designated as national important cultural properties. ”The History of Japanese Cinema” is a permanent exhibition where you can view valuable movie and film materials, such as old projectors, movie posters, and magazines. There is a large and a small hall where you can enjoy viewing various films. It is a one-minute walk from either the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Kyobashi Station or the Toei Subway Asakusa Line Takaracho Station.
