Tonogayato Gardens

The garden area was formerly owned by corporations and attached to the villas of Japanese tycoons. During urban development in the 1960s, local residents stood up to preserve the land, which led to the area becoming a public garden with an admission fee. The strolling garden has an area of approximately 21,000 square meters and utilizes the natural terrain of Musashino Plateau by incorporating the cliffs and lower ponds into its design, giving the garden a different look as you walk along the paths. A thick deciduous forest completes the scene. In 2011, Tonogayato Gardens were designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. The natural spring pond, once called Jiro Benten no Kiyomizu, is also recognized as special (a ”remarkable water”) and is currently home to spot-bill ducks from spring to summer, giving visitors a sense of solace. The garden is the site of various events throughout the year, especially in autumn and winter. During the peak autumn season, the Koyotei tea house on the higher ground provides a spectacular view of the bright-red Japanese maple trees. A two-minute walk from Kokubunji Station of Chuo, Seibu Kokubunji and Seibu Tamako Lines.
