Description
Asunoshinwa is a huge mural installed on the wall of the connecting walkway within Mark City between JR Shibuya Station and Keio Inokashira Line.
This masterpiece by Taro Okamoto (1911-1996) is 5.5 m x 30 m and features an image of the tragic moment of an atomic bomb explosion. The mural was made at the request of a Mexican businessman to display in a hotel lobby, but when his business faltered the hotel was left unfinished and the mural was lost.
In 2003, the mural was discovered at a storage facility in a Mexican suburb and transported back to Japan in 2005.
It took one year to restore the mural as it had suffered major damage.
In 2008, the mural was installed permanently in Shibuya, a short walk from JR Shibuya Station.
