What Kind of Town is Kinshicho?

Located in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, Kinshicho is a fascinating area where old history and new culture breathe. It once flourished as a town of artisans retaining the charm of old Edo, and you can still find remnants of that atmosphere today. At the same time, it's equipped with modern urban functions, lined with large commercial complexes and high-rise buildings. With outstanding access to TOKYO SKYTREE (R), it's a place where downtown vibes and futuristic scenery coexist—truly a "microcosm of Tokyo."

Why is Kinshicho Getting So Much Attention Now?
Kinshicho, a town where Tokyo's shitamachi vibe intersects with modern urban culture. In recent years, it has quietly been gaining popularity among inbound tourists. There are several reasons why. It's easily accessible from both Narita and Haneda airports and is perfectly located as a sightseeing base, being within 10 minutes by train of popular spots like TOKYO SKYTREE, Asakusa, and Ryogoku. Despite great access to major central stations, it has many reasonably priced hotels. Plus, it's packed with local-favorite restaurants and unique shops, allowing you to experience real, everyday Japan.

"TERMINA": The Station Building Directly Connected to JR Kinshicho Station, Loved by Locals Since 1961

At the gateway to Kinshicho, directly connected to JR Kinshicho Station, is the commercial complex "TERMINA." It's the first place you should stop when visiting Kinshicho. Its prime location, just outside the JR Kinshicho Station ticket gates, means you can access it instantly without getting wet, even on rainy days.
It functions as a "center of daily life" for local residents who visit daily for commuting and shopping, and as a "convenient hub" for tourists. This multi-purpose complex combines shopping, gourmet dining, and services, making it no exaggeration to say it's a place that can fulfill every tourist's "want to buy," "want to eat," and "want to experience" desire.
For those staying in Kinshicho, this is an incredibly convenient and noteworthy facility.
The Three Faces of TERMINA: Main Building, TERMINA 2, and TERMINA 3
TERMINA consists of three buildings—"Main Building," "TERMINA 2," and "TERMINA 3"—hosting over 100 shops. Each features its own distinct concept, offering unique shops and restaurants. You'll make new discoveries in each building, almost like exploring three different towns. Now, let's dive deeper into the charms of each one.
TERMINA Main Building (Just outside JR Kinshicho Sta. South Exit): The All-in-One Complex for Everything from Shopping to Gourmet Food

As its name suggests, the Main Building is the heart of TERMINA. From the B1F to the 7F, it's packed with a wide range of shops and restaurants, ensuring you won't be bored even if you spend the whole day here. For international visitors, we especially recommend the floors where you can glimpse everyday Japanese life and find uniquely Japanese products.
B1F: Experience Japan's "Food" Culture! The Exquisite Food Floor
The B1F of TERMINA Main Building is truly a "food treasury." It features specialty shops that support Japan's food culture, such as "Kinshicho Uotora," a fish market with fresh seafood, and "Niku no Takumi Ito," which handles high-quality meat. There's also a full lineup of osozai (side dishes), bento boxes, bread, and sweets, perfect for a meal back at your hotel or for a small picnic.
My personal recommendation is "Cha Maruyamaen," which carries traditional Japanese tea. Their beautiful green tea and hojicha (roasted green tea) are sure to be appreciated as souvenirs.
And, what you absolutely cannot miss on this floor are the master wagashi (Japanese confectionery) shops, beloved by Kinshicho locals for decades.
"Okashitsukasa Yamadaya": A true institution, established in 1936. Their charming "Tanuki Kintsuba" (a raccoon-dog shaped sweet) is adorable and guaranteed to be a great conversation starter. Their jonamagashi (high-grade fresh sweets), made with traditional techniques, are also exquisite.
"Kinshicho Shirakaba": Their signature product, "Kinshicho Potato," is a delicacy. It has a wonderfully moist texture, and the gentle, natural sweetness of sweet potato fills your mouth. You'll often see locals lining up to buy them as gifts (temiyage).
Being able to easily discover authentic, local flavors like these is another one of TERMINA's greatest charms.
1F-3F: "Yodobashi Camera" for the Latest Electronics and a Cafe Break
From the 1F to the 3F is "Yodobashi Camera," one of Japan's leading electronics retailers. You'll find a massive lineup of products showcasing the best of Japanese technology, including the latest cameras, beauty appliances, and smartphones. Tax-free shopping is available, so you can shop at a great value.
4F: The Floor for Fashion & Lifestyle
The 4F is dedicated to fashion and lifestyle goods. It features apparel shops incorporating Japanese trends and unique accessory stores. It's the perfect place to find a souvenir for yourself or check out the latest in Japanese fashion. Be sure to stop by!
5F: Restaurant Street to Soothe Your Travel Weariness and "JTB"
The 5F is a floor gathering various genres of restaurants. Japanese, Western, Chinese—it's great to be able to choose based on your mood. A delicious meal is essential for healing a body tired from traveling. There is also a "JTB" travel agency, so it might be a good time to plan your next trip.
6F-7F: A Space for Culture and Wellness
The 6F hosts the "Yomiuri Culture & Clinic," offering facilities related to Japanese cultural experiences and health. There is also a golf school on the 7F. For those planning a longer stay who want to delve deeper into Japanese culture, these facilities might be appealing.
Please check the facility information for tax-free service availability.

After enjoying shopping and dining at TERMINA, why not venture out to the fascinating sightseeing spots around Kinshicho? Kinshicho has great access to Tokyo's major tourist destinations, allowing you to have a variety of experiences using TERMINA as your base.
TOKYO SKYTREE (R): A Breathtaking Panoramic View

The closest landmark to Kinshicho is, without a doubt, TOKYO SKYTREE (R). You can see its majestic form from TERMINA, but you should definitely experience its power up close and see the panoramic view from the observatory at least once. By day, you can see the entire Tokyo cityscape, and by night, a beautiful night view unfolds. It's accessible from Kinshicho in just a few minutes by train or even on foot. In particular, "Tower View Dori" (Tower View Street), which connects Kinshicho Station and SKYTREE, is a fantastic photo spot where SKYTREE lines up perfectly. The first time I saw it, its beauty took my breath away.

Sumida Ward's Hidden Gems: Touring Sites Related to Hokusai

Sumida Ward, where Kinshicho is located, is also known for its connection to the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. At The Sumida Hokusai Museum, you can learn deeply about Hokusai's masterpieces and his life. Throughout the town, you'll also find art motifs from Hokusai's works and walking courses that take you to related sites.
