Description
The oldest maritime museum in the Tokyo Waterfront Secondary City Center. Visitors can learn more about Japanese seas under the theme of the culture of oceans and ships. The highlight of the museum is a display of Japan's first Antarctic research ship, the Soya. The Soya was built as a cargo icebreaker and served in the Pacific War. After the war, she served as a repatriation ship, a lighthouse supply ship, an Antarctic research ship, and a patrol ship for the Japan Coast Guard. Since retirement she moors at the current location as a museum exhibition. The museum exhibits various vessel models, such as a passenger ship, a cargo ship, a patrol ship of the Japan Coast Guard, and an Aegis ship of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force. It also shows various videos. Even with all these attractions, the admission is free of charge. The museum also holds canoe and sailing-canoe classes in a swimming pool that is inside the property. Confirmation of the schedule, fees, and the booking procedure in advance are required. Exit the train at the Shin-kotsu Yurikamome Line Fune-no-kagakukan Station.
