Description
The Sumida, one of the most famous rivers in Tokyo. It was a popular theme of ukiyo-e and nishiki-e prints as well as dramas during the Edo period. Shin-Ohashi Bridge stands between the Kiyosu and Ryogoku bridges. Built in 1693, it was named Shin-Ohashi because it was at lower reaches of the Sumida than the then-Ohashi Bridge (now called Ryogoku Bridge). In the late-Edo period, ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige Utagawa drew the bridge in his ”Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake,” which became world famous after being copied by Vincent van Gogh. Shin-Ohashi was also called ”Life Saving Bridge” since it was spared by the Great Kanto Earthquake and helped people to escape. The present bridge, built in 1977, has a beautiful rectilinear design. Many TV drama series have been filmed along the nearby banks, and together with Kiyosu Bridge, Shin-Ohashi is listed in ”100 Views of New Tokyo.” A three-minute walk from Morishita Station on the Toei Oedo or Shinjuku Lines.
