Here, we’ll dive into the history of King Seiko, from their designs to their functions, to find out why they are so appealing.

History of the King Seiko
The King Seiko collection pioneered the evolution of mechanical watches in Japan when it debuted in 1961, a time of high economic growth in the country due to post-war reconstruction efforts and preparation for the 1964 Olympic Games. During this dawning age, King Seiko was able to successfully create a new luxury watch collection that kept an eye on design and functionality while remaining reasonably priced.
The first King Seiko was made at Daini Seikosha in Kameido, Tokyo, and featured an urban and modern design. The design using straight lines was simple yet sophisticated, reflecting the new lifestyle of Tokyo at the time.
King Seiko production ceased in the 1970s but was revived in 2022, for the first time in about 50 years. The turning point was Seiko's 140th anniversary in 2021, during which a limited number of KSK reproductions were sold, causing an uproar that led to the revival of the brand the following year.
What Makes the Revived King Seiko So Special? Insights from the Product Planner and Designer
King Seiko's revival is a tale that transcends time. We can feel the craftsmen's commitment and passion in this model, which is a perfect combination where traditional design meets modern technology. We sat down with Mr. Oya of product planning, and Mr. Matsumoto of production design to discuss King Seiko's appeal.
"The Newest Classic" Shows Us King Seiko's Evolution
What's the brand philosophy and technology behind the revived King Seiko in 2022?
Oya: The brand philosophy is "The Newest Classic," which embraces modern-day values while keeping the qualities of the original models. For example, the thinness of manual-winding watches from then has been retained despite the watches now having automatic winding, which is more convenient for people today. In other words, the watches have been updated with modern technology but still retain their classic elements.
Matsumoto: For everyday ease of use, the dial has been designed to show only the essentials. However, on a closer look, you'll notice that the 12 o'clock index has a pyramid cut, which shines beautifully as light is reflected from it. This small detail provides a sense of depth and luxury to the entire dial, allowing the owner to enjoy a new impression each time they look at it.
King Seiko is a Tokyo-born collection that fuses cutting-edge design with reliable traditional quality. The two types of watches currently available are the KSK series, known for its sharp and linear designs, and the KS1969 series, known for its elegant yet more comfortable appearance. While each series has its own appeal, they both share the high level of precision and craftsmanship they are known for, and both are special timepieces that demonstrate King Seiko's unique aesthetics and quality.
King Seiko KSK Caliber 6R51 Model: The Appeal of Extended Power Reserve and Compact Design
The KSK Caliber 6R51 Model is the most notable among the King Seiko KSK series.
Oya: This model features a long power reserve and a small diameter. Thanks to an especially equipped mechanism, the movement can last for about three days. So if the mainspring was fully wound and removed on a Friday night, it would still function normally the following Monday morning, making it highly practical.
Matsumoto: This model has the smallest case size in King Seiko's current lineup at 36.1mm in diameter. However , despite being smaller, this model gives a stronger and more dynamic impression thanks to how the shape of the case connects to the bracelet.
Matsumoto: Thanks to the sharp edges of the case and lugs, any light that hits them reflects beautifully and further highlights the watch's contours.
Commitment to Style and Functionality in the KSK Caliber 6R51 Model
The KSK Caliber 6R51 was designed for both functionality and everyday practicality. The bracelet is easy to use and its appeal is further enhanced by being easily visible.
Matsumoto: The underside of the lug is curved for comfort. So even though the watch itself has a sharp appearance, the underside is gentle on the skin, making it comfortable to wear.
The metal bracelet also features a quick-release lever, which allows the case and bracelet to be separated without tools. This also allows for the bracelet to be replaced with leather straps (sold separately), allowing the owner more flexibility to match their watch according to their outfit.
The hands and indexes on the KSK Caliber 6R51 Model use Lumibrite.
Oya: The glow emitted ensures visibility even at night or in dark places. The Saxe Blue dial, in particular, uses white Lumibrite, giving it a fresh and elegant Tokyo-esque impression.
Something else not to be overlooked is King Seiko's three-dimensional shield logo engraved on the back of the case.
The Theme is 1960s Japan: A Closer Look at the Sophisticated Dial Design
The KSK Caliber 6R51's greatest appeal is its dial color. After many trials, we decided on three.
Matsumoto: The colors for each dial were inspired by the Ivy League Look, a popular fashion that developed in Japan in the 1960s. Ivy green is reminiscent of regimental ties, saxe blue recalls the color of Oxford shirts, and burgundy calls to mind the color of rugby shirts at the time. The gold seconds hand on the ivy green and burgundy models is also a nod to Ivy League Look fashion, giving the watches a playful impression.
The straight and sharp case lines as well as the colored dials reflect the culture of 1960s Japan, and the attention to detail is evident on every last bit of the watch.
The King Seiko KSK Caliber 6L35 Model' Reflects Tokyo's History and Scenery
The King Seiko KSK Caliber 6L35 Model, also released in 2024, gives the impression of the traditions of its birthplace, Tokyo.
The slim design and colors of the KSK Caliber 6L35 Model reflect the scenery and culture of the time of Tokyo.
Matsumoto: The plum blossoms of Kameido, which are so famous that they were depicted in Ukiyo-e art, were the inspiration for the model, featuring a stenciled pattern with a deep red gradation. Depending on the light, the plum blossoms can appear three-dimensional on the beautiful dial. The model featuring tortoiseshell patterns has a deep blue dial representing the Sumida River and symbolizes longevity and good fortune. The model inspired by the wisteria trellis at Kameido Tenjin Shrine also has a stenciled pattern with a light purple gradation. This gives the impression of wisteria swaying in the wind in the spring.
These delicate details add to the elegance of the KSK Caliber 6L35 models.
Who is the King Seiko KSK Best Suited For?
Matsumoto: I think the sharp design is more suited to someone with an urban and modern lifestyle. The watch can be worn in both business or casual settings, making it perfect for someone who enjoys wearing the watch even on their days off.
Oya: They’re watches that anyone can wear, so we recommend them to all our customers regardless of gender.
They also make great Japanese souvenirs.
The KSK series with its blend of design and practicality helps to create a sophisticated, urban feel for any setting, whether business or casual.
Timeless Beauty and Craftsmanship: The Enduring Brilliance of King Seiko
King Seiko is more than just a replica model. While it has evolved with the use of modern technology, it has also inherited the beauty of the original model from the 1960s. It is a watch that defines the design and precision of Japanese craftsmanship.
A King Seiko watch is perfect for those who wish to express themselves through their watch while at the same time wearing a piece that reflects the history and culture of Tokyo. So why not make donning a King Seiko, a watch that blends sophistication and practicality, a part of your daily life?
