At the heart of Bunkoya Oozeki’s craft lies one crucial element: the leather itself. The workshop maintains a supply of white leather made specifically for their unique craft, delivered in large, uncut rolls and expertly prepared for the intricate embossing work that follows.

In Bunkoya Oozeki’s early days, artisans used hand-carved wooden plates to emboss each piece of leather. CEO Tanaka still keeps some of these originals—heirlooms from his grandfather and cherished reminders of the company’s beginnings.

Today, the tradition continues with precision-crafted copper plates, which allow even the most delicate details to come to life. Inside the workshop, the rhythmic hum of vintage pressing machines—once used to press soy sauce and cleverly repurposed by Bunkoya Oozeki’s skilled artisans—fills the air. Each plate is carefully aligned with cuts of white leather, and the machine settings are calibrated with precision to ensure flawless impressions.

A small team of coloration artisans brings each embossed design to life, painting it carefully one brushstroke at a time. Working from a base palette of just eight colors, they mix each shade by hand—recreating the same hues with impressive consistency in a process that demands both precision, patience, and experience.

Adding to the challenge, the artisans must paint in reverse. Since the final sabi-ire step deepens the shadows and colors the crevices of the embossed leather, they focus solely on the light and color areas, visualizing the finished piece before it fully takes shape. It’s a process that requires not just technical skill, but a deep familiarity with how every element will interact once the design is complete.

As the only remaining leather workshop in Japan to carry on the sabi-ire tradition, Bunkoya Oozeki takes great pride in this meticulous part of its craft. The process relies on makomo ground into an ultra-fine powder. However, with only one remaining producer in all of Japan who meets their quality standards, the company took preservation into its own hands by collaborating with makomo researchers and initiating small-scale test cultivation efforts in the nearby Chiba area.

The makomo is dried, ground into powder, and packed into netted bags. Artisans then rub the powder into every crevice of the embossed leather. Though it may seem simple, achieving perfect coverage is deceptively difficult, as even slight unevenness can compromise the final result.

A layer of lacquer is applied alongside the powder to help it adhere, gradually revealing the design’s full intricacy and depth as it sets. After resting for a full day, any excess powder is gently removed, and a final topcoat is applied to seal the design. This ensures durability while enhancing the texture and depth of the finish.

The transformation brought by the sabi-ire process is striking: delicate golden-brown tones seep into the embossed lines, revealing intricate patterns and rich textures across the once plain white leather. The result is a warm, organic finish that evokes the understated elegance of traditional Japanese artistry.
