■About Houshi ~The Oldest Inn in Hokuriku~ The history of Houshi began alongside the history of Mount Hakusan, one of Japan's three sacred mountains, which marked its 1300th anniversary since its opening. Hakusan Daigongen appeared in a dream to the great monk Taicho, who was undergoing rigorous training on Mount Hakusan, and revealed the location of a sacred spring hidden deep underground. Following this divine revelation, the monk traveled to Awazu, unearthed the sacred spring, and instructed his close disciple Gyōryō Houshi to build an inn there and entrusted him with its care. This marked the beginning of 'Houshi.' After Gyōryō Houshi's passing, his adopted son Zengorō succeeded as the second generation, and since then, the inn has been operated exclusively by the family for 46 generations, making it a rare establishment in the world that continues to protect its sacred waters to this day.

'A fusion of tradition inherited from ancient times and a modern sensibility.' With a history of approximately 3,000 years, Dogo Onsen is said to be one of Japan's three oldest hot springs. Funaya Ryokan (currently known as 'Funaya') opened in the Dogo area during the Kanei era of the Edo period (around 1627). For over 390 years since then, it has been cherished as a lodging for countless travelers. While valuing tradition and maintaining its prestige, it also actively incorporates new and good elements to provide hospitality to its guests. This is the spirit of Funaya. It has also been patronized by many notable figures, such as Natsume Soseki, Masaoka Shiki, and Eiichi Shibusawa.
