Description
Wakasa Station is the terminal station of Wakasa Railways in eastern Tottori Prefecture. The station still has the atmosphere of a railway heritage site, with its steam locomotive turntable and water tower dating back to the station’s inauguration in 1930. It also hosts exhibitions of steam locomotives still in use today and offers rides.
The station’s tourist information center introduces local attractions and offers bicycle rentals. It is a great starting point for walking through Wakasa-juku, a nostalgic castle town area with white-walled storehouses and traditional townhouses.
Nearby attractions include Takumi-no-Yakata (about 15 minutes on foot), where visitors can try woodworking, and Fudoin Iwayado (about 20 minutes by bus), a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Travel from Tottori Station to Wakasa Station takes about 1 hour, with a transfer from the JR Inbi Line to the Wakasa Railway.
