The route was announced as part of what United describes as the largest international network expansion in the airline’s history. But for Japan travelers in particular, Okinawa is easily one of the most interesting additions.

For many U.S. travelers, a first trip to Japan begins among the skyscrapers and train stations of Tokyo or Osaka. Fly directly into Okinawa, and the first impression could hardly be more different.

Okinawa is a subtropical island prefecture known for turquoise water, coral reefs, beaches, lush forests, resort hotels, and a culture shaped by the former Ryukyu Kingdom. Average temperatures are around 23°C (73°F) annually, giving the islands a warmer climate than Japan’s major mainland destinations.

It isn’t simply “Japan, but with beaches,” either. Okinawa has distinctive architecture, performing arts, crafts, cuisine, languages, and history, with influences from centuries of trade around East Asia as well as more recent connections with the United States. It’s a side of the country that can feel surprisingly different from Kyoto, Tokyo, or Hokkaido.

And Okinawa itself isn’t just one island.

The new United flight will arrive at Naha Airport on Okinawa Main Island, the largest and most populated island in the prefecture.

For first-time visitors, the Main Island is the easiest introduction to Okinawa. Naha offers shopping, dining, markets, and easy access to sites connected to the former Ryukyu Kingdom, while the island’s central and northern regions open onto resort coastlines, beaches, dramatic scenery, and subtropical forests. The island stretches for more than 100 kilometers from north to south, so there is plenty here for a multi-day road trip.

Travelers can explore Ryukyuan history around Shurijo Castle Park, enjoy the cafés and seaside atmosphere around Chatan, base themselves at a beach resort around Onna Village, or head north toward the forests of Yambaru National Park.

If postcard-perfect beaches are the main reason you’re flying south, consider connecting from Naha to Miyako Island.

Miyako is around a 50-minute flight from Naha. It is especially famous for its remarkably clear turquoise water, white-sand beaches, snorkeling, diving, and long ocean drives across bridges connecting neighboring islands. Yonaha Maehama Beach is one of its signature stretches of sand, while Higashi-Hennazaki offers spectacular coastal scenery from the island’s eastern tip.

It’s a strong choice for travelers who want their Okinawa trip to lean heavily toward beaches, resorts, swimming, and slow island days.

Another option is to continue from Naha to Ishigaki Island, around 400 kilometers southwest of Okinawa Main Island.

Ishigaki combines beaches and marine activities with thick subtropical vegetation and a strong sense of traditional island culture. Kabira Bay is one of its best-known sights, while the waters surrounding the island are popular for snorkeling and diving, including opportunities to see manta rays and sea turtles.

Ishigaki is also the gateway to the wider Yaeyama Islands. From Ishigaki Port, travelers can continue by ferry to islands including Taketomi and Iriomote, making it a particularly appealing base for a more adventurous island-hopping trip.

Until now, many international visitors have treated Okinawa as something to tack onto a Tokyo or Osaka itinerary, requiring another domestic flight after arriving in Japan.

The new San Francisco service creates another possibility: starting the trip in Okinawa itself.

A traveler could spend several days exploring Okinawa Main Island before flying onward to Tokyo, Osaka, or another part of Japan. Alternatively, those with more time could use Naha as a jumping-off point for Miyako, Ishigaki, or other islands in the archipelago.

For travelers from the Bay Area in particular, that makes Okinawa far easier to consider as a destination in its own right rather than an optional detour.

Okinawa isn’t the only Japanese destination included in United’s latest expansion.

Beginning March 27, 2027, the airline also plans to launch daily service between Los Angeles and Osaka. The route will complement United’s existing Osaka services from San Francisco and Guam.

Elsewhere, United announced new international destinations including Luxembourg City, Toulouse, Ljubljana, Olbia in Sardinia, Catania in Sicily, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, and Terceira in the Azores.

New routes are also planned between Washington, D.C. and Milan and between Denver and Paris, while service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv is scheduled to resume.

Several of the European routes will use United’s new Airbus A321XLR, featuring Polaris suites with privacy doors, Premium Plus seating, Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, and a redesigned Economy Plus option. Okinawa, however, will be served by the larger Boeing 777-200ER.

Tokyo’s bright lights, Kyoto’s temples, and Osaka’s food scene may dominate many first-time Japan itineraries, but Okinawa shows just how geographically and culturally diverse the country can be.

With tropical beaches, coral seas, Ryukyuan heritage, subtropical forests, and dozens of islands to explore, it can easily fill an entire vacation rather than simply a few days at the end of one.

And from March 2027, getting there from the U.S. is set to become considerably simpler.
