Yokohama Motomachi Shopping Street

横浜元町ショッピングストリート

Description

When Yokohama opened its port in 1859, the street was an area where shops gathered that were aimed at the foreign population living in the Yamate Bluff settlement, providing goods for daily living, but it later developed into a fashion street. The stone pavement that stretches for approximately 600 meters is lined with around 230 stores; long-established stores are famous for their Motomachi brands, such as the bag store Kitamura, the women's shoe store Mihama, the accessory store Star Jewelry, and the casual fashion store Fukuzo, as well as newly-formed cafes and shops. Twice a year, in the spring and autumn, the street holds the Motomachi Charming Sale, where Motomachi-original brand products are sold for a discount price. So that visitors can drop in to shop during a walk, there are ”pets' bars” where pets can drink water set up at various points, restaurants, and cafes where pets are allowed. It is a two-minute walk from the Ishikawacho Station on the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line.
