Description
Namamugi Shopping Street is a wholesale district spanning about 400 meters with special shops dealing in marine products such as fish, along with grocery and lacquerware stores for sushi shops and other restaurants. Most shops here handle marine products. Some even deal exclusively in tuna or conger eel, as one might expect of a marine-shop district called ”uogashi.” The area was limited to professional dealers until the organizer, Namamugi Gyokai Kyokai, opened it to ordinary shoppers with the motto ”In small quantity, for anyone and with easy access,” meaning anyone can purchase items at wholesale prices, even if you only buy a single fish or seashell. In early morning, however, the district is filled with professional dealers; ordinary shoppers are advised to visit after 9:30 am. Shop clerks here will kindly show you how to pry open shells, how to slice fish and even how to cook seafood. And they will pack your purchases into styrofoam boxes filled with ice, for free. A three-minute walk from Kagetsuen-mae Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line.
