(Hidden Gem in Ibaraki) Ocean-View Torii, Hydrangeas & a Lucky Turtle! A Perfect Day Trip to Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine

Date published: 22 June 2026

Welcome early summer by the sea with hydrangeas in Ibaraki! As temperatures rise and the city hustle continues, how about escaping Tokyo for a refreshing day trip to somewhere scenic?

Hop on a train to Ibaraki and head straight for the coast! Every June, hydrangeas bloom across Japan. Tucked away along Ibaraki’s coastline is a breathtaking hidden gem that perfectly blends the “deep blue ocean” with “dreamy hydrangeas."

Not only is this a peaceful haven away from the crowds, but it also hosts a summer-limited “Hydrangea Pilgrimage” (Ajisai-moude). Plus, there’s a supposedly super-effective “Lucky Turtle” waiting to boost your wealth! So, let’s step into Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine and explore its magic.

Over 1,000 Years of History—An Intro to Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine

Perched along the Ibaraki coast, Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine boasts a deeply rich history, founded way back in the Heian period (856 AD).

It enshrines “Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto” (the deity of medicine, healing, and sake brewing) and “Oanamuchi-no-Mikoto” (also known as Okuninushi, the deity of matchmaking and tying the knot).

Here, you can pray for everything from health and wealth to career success and safe voyages. It’s incredibly famous for answering prayers for financial luck—so much so that tour groups from Taiwan charter buses to visit!

To welcome international tourists, the shrine even offers brochures in English and Chinese, and yep, they accept electronic payments! It’s just a 10-minute walk from the nearest Isozaki Station, and there’s a spacious parking lot right out front. Whether you’re navigating by train or driving a rental car, it’s super easy to get here!

Must-Take Photo Spots at Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine

Now that you know a little about the shrine, let’s dive into my top three must-snap photo spots on the grounds!

The Mystical Tunnel of Trees

Step through the main entrance, and a deep, enchanting tunnel of trees will immediately greet you. Lined with towering trees that are over 300 years old, their lush branches form a beautiful green canopy that weaves light and shadow together.

Strolling through here with the sunlight filtering through the leaves creates such a tranquil, sacred vibe—it feels like you’ve been transported to another world.

The Breathtaking "Ocean-View Torii"

Take a stroll halfway through the tree tunnel, turn left, and watch the view suddenly open up! At the end of the path stands a majestic torii gate acting like a giant picture frame, perfectly capturing the deep blue Pacific Ocean. If you walk past the torii and down the long staircase, you’ll reach the beach.

In early summer (mid-to-late June), the path on either side of the torii bursts into bloom with colorful, gradient hydrangeas. The contrast between the blue ocean and romantic hydrangeas is so stunning that every traveler can’t help but gasp at the beauty.

The "Lucky Turtle" Will Bring You Fortune!

Beyond the gorgeous scenery, the most important and popular spot on the shrine grounds is the “Lucky Turtle”—a sacred spot for wealth! It’s located right along the main path, directly opposite a rest area, so you definitely won’t miss it.

This stone sea turtle was donated by a real-life lottery winner as a token of gratitude! Legend has it that gently stroking the turtle will bring you good luck, too.

By the way, they say that following these steps for your shrine visit will bring you even better luck with money:
1. Pray at the main hall first: toss in your offering coin (usually 5 yen), bow twice, clap twice, make your wish, and bow once more.

2. Buy a wealth-boosting amulet (omamori) from the shrine office.

3. Gently stroke the Lucky Turtle while holding your new amulet, and finally, keep the amulet in your bag to carry that good luck with you everywhere!

2026 Dreamy Limited Items: The Transparent "Hydrangea Luck Amulet" and Limited Goshuin

The highlight of Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine in the summer is the limited-time “Hydrangea Pilgrimage” (Ajisai-moude). During this time, you can get the exclusive transparent “Hydrangea Luck Amulet” and a special hydrangea goshuin (shrine stamp).

For 2026, they are available from June 1 to July 31. However, the hydrangeas themselves usually finish blooming by late June, so if you want to catch the magical combo of the flowers and the ocean-view torii, don’t miss your window!

So Dreamy! The Transparent "Hydrangea Luck Amulet"

Those transparent amulets you’ve been seeing all over Instagram lately? Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine has them too! This year, they’ve even added a visually refreshing light blue version, bringing the total to three gorgeous colors (1,500 yen each).

These clear amulets feature the iconic ocean-view torii and hydrangeas, and when the sunlight hits them just right, the dreamy level goes off the charts!

The shrine mentioned that many tourists fall in love with these on Instagram and ask about overseas shipping. Unfortunately, they currently only ship to domestic addresses in Japan.

But honestly, I recommend making the trip yourself if you have the time—enjoying the view, offering your prayers, and then picking up the amulet makes it so much more special!

Year of the Horse Limited Amulet

The transparent amulets aren’t just limited to the hydrangea design; there are also special Year of the Horse amulets! Shaped like horseshoes, these four amulets correspond to different types of luck (1,500 yen each).
・Red: Traffic safety
・Gold: Winning tickets & lotteries
・Black: Smooth sailing at work & warding off stress
・Green: Things going well (Fulfillment of wishes)

Early Summer Limited Goshuin

In addition to amulets, Japanese shrines offer “Goshuin” (shrine stamps) for collectors. During the Hydrangea Pilgrimage, Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine naturally offers a limited edition hydrangea goshuin!

The one on the right features a light blue background and text that practically cools you down just looking at it. The one on the left is the “Nagoshi no Oharae” (Summer Purification) goshuin.

Both are available from June 1 to June 30 for 500 yen each. They also have other yearly and seasonal stamps, so if you’re a collector, definitely check them out!

Everyday Favorites

Aside from the seasonal exclusives, there are plenty of popular amulets available year-round! For instance, the Golden Luck Amulet (1,000 yen, right) and the Wishing Shell Golden Luck Amulet (1,000 yen, left). If you want the gods to bless your bank account, definitely grab these two!

Let's Take a Walk Around the Shrine!

Now that we've covered the basics, let’s take a look at some more beautiful scenery around the shrine grounds!

Taking the transparent hydrangea amulet to the ocean-view torii path for a photoshoot is a must! Even though the hydrangeas weren’t in full bloom during my visit, the beautiful summer colors against the clear sky were incredibly soothing.

Step through the ocean-view torii and down the stairs, and the coastal scenery unfolds right before your eyes. Take a deep breath of that cool sea breeze while soaking in the blue sky, the ocean, and the lush greenery.

Turning our attention back to the shrine grounds, after praying at the main hall—which is flanked by gorgeous hydrangeas—head over to the shrine office on the left to pick out amulets and draw a fortune slip!

Beyond the limited amulets we talked about, the office also has a variety of adorable fortune slips (omikuji) to choose from. Like these gold and white cat fortunes (500 yen)! Pick a cute kitty and see what wisdom it has for you.

Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine’s famous Lucky Turtle has also been turned into a cute little fortune slip (700 yen)! If you’re looking for hints or advice about your finances, be sure to draw one to take home.

Shrine Visit Q&A

Now that we’ve introduced Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine, you might have a few questions about shrine etiquette and how to do things the traditional Japanese way. I asked the shrine some of your most frequently asked questions, so give this a read before you go!

Q1: What are the most popular amulets for international visitors?
Whether they are from the West or Taiwan, the most popular ones recently are the “Golden Luck Amulet” (both the beckoning cat and shell designs) and the “Hydrangea Luck Amulet.” Many visitors also tend to buy a large quantity and variety of amulets at once.

Q2: How should I store and handle my amulets?
・Returning them: Generally, it’s customary to return an amulet to the shrine you bought it from after one year. However, if you’re visiting from overseas, you can drop it off at a nearby shrine on your next trip to Japan, or it is totally fine to keep it as a souvenir!
・Daily storage: If you carry it with you, you can attach it to your bag or wallet. If you keep it at home, you can place it on a Kamidana (Shinto altar), on a high shelf, or in a bright, sunny spot, such as your living room.

Q3: What is the meaning behind a goshuin (shrine stamp)?
A goshuin is granted as “proof” that you have visited a shrine or temple. Recently, places have started offering incredibly creative designs, so they’ve taken on a bit of a “commemorative stamp” feel. But historically, back when traveling wasn’t easy, making the trek to a distant shrine was a physically demanding feat. Earning a goshuin back then probably evoked an even deeper sense of gratitude and preciousness than it does today!

Q4: Are there any photography rules I should be aware of on the shrine grounds?
If you want to take photos inside the shrine buildings (like during a group prayer or a baby’s first shrine visit), you need to get permission from the shrine staff beforehand. But if you’re snapping photos outside on the grounds, you are more than welcome to! As long as you aren’t bothering other visitors, snap away.

Q5: Any recommended spots nearby?
If you’re driving:
About a 10-minute drive away, you’ll find Hitachi Seaside Park, Fashion Cruise (a large shopping mall), Joyful Honda (a massive home center), and Costco. It’s also only a 15-minute drive to Katsuta Station, where you can find the famous Saza Coffee (Katsuta Station branch or the main store). The sister shrine, “Oarai Isozaki Shrine,” is about a 20-minute drive.
If you’re taking the “Hitachinaka Seaside Railway” train:
Near the final stop, Ajigaura Station, is Horide Shrine (which houses the Hoshiimo Shrine on its grounds). Plus, the Nakaminato Fish Market near Nakaminato Station is highly recommended for fresh, delicious seafood at any time. Nakaminato Station is also surrounded by traditional old-school diners and other shrines and temples, making it a super fun area to explore on foot. You can also catch a bus from Nakaminato Station to the sister shrine, Oarai Isozaki Shrine.

From Tokyo: Early Summer Coastal Day Trip Itinerary

Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine is right on the Ibaraki coast, with the closest station being Isozaki Station on the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway Minato Line (about a 10-minute walk).

But since you’re coming all this way, I highly recommend grabbing a Minato Line 1-Day Free Ticket (1,000 yen for adults, 500 yen for kids) and exploring everything along the line!

If you’re heading out from Tokyo, hop on the JR Joban Line Limited Express “Hitachi” or “Tokiwa” from Ueno or Shinagawa to Katsuta Station, and transfer to the Minato Line there.
There are quite a few amazing spots along the railway and in the surrounding area that you can easily pack into your itinerary for an action-packed day!

Nakaminato Fish Market

Just a 10-minute walk from Nakaminato Station, the Nakaminato Fish Market offers the absolute freshest seafood straight from the Pacific! With seven restaurants and five seafood shops inside, you can feast on everything from mouthwatering sashimi bowls to sushi and set meals, satisfying all your oceanic cravings. Why not plan your lunch break around the Nakaminato Fish Market and refuel with some incredible seafood?

Oarai Isozaki Shrine

You can catch a bus from Nakaminato Station to Oarai Isozaki Shrine. This is the sister shrine to Sakatsura Isozaki Shrine, and together they watch over the Ibaraki coast! (There’s even a sign at Sakatsura reminding you to go check out Oarai!)

Oarai Isozaki Shrine is best known for the “Kamiiso Torii,” a gate perched atop the coastal rocks. Watching the waves crash dramatically against the rocks behind the torii is incredibly powerful! If you manage an early morning visit, you can catch the famously stunning view of the sunrise framing the torii over the ocean.

The deities enshrined here are Onamuchi-no-Mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto—compassionate gods who heal the people. You can pray here for health, good matchmaking, and safety at sea and at home.

Located near Katsuta Station, the starting point of the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway Minato Line (which you can reach directly from Ueno via the JR Joban Line “Hitachi” or “Tokiwa” expresses). This park is world-famous for its sea of blue nemophila flowers in mid-April! Different seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year, and there’s even an amusement park inside with a Ferris wheel and roller coasters. No matter when you visit, you’re guaranteed a fun time!

Aqua World Ibaraki Oarai Aquarium

Just a 7-minute bus ride from Nakaminato Station on the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway Minato Line. This massive aquarium is home to 580 different species and about 68,000 marine animals, including 60 species of sharks alone! Don’t miss the dreamy jellyfish tanks, which feature seasonal lighting and music to create a romantic, high-tech underwater world.
