Description
Hara Museum ARC is home to the Hara Museum Collection, assembled by Toshio Hara, chairman of the Foundation Arc-en-Ciel, which spans the major art movements in Japan and abroad from the 1950s onward. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki, the museum's distinctive pyramid-shaped galleries provide an exquisite setting for the enjoyment of contemporary art. The Kankai Pavilion, by contrast, is a beautifully crafted space inspired by the shoin-zukuri style of Buddhist temple architecture. It is a showcase for the Hara Rokuro Collection of traditional East Asian art amassed by the Meiji-era industrialist Rokuro Hara and includes items that have been designated a National Treasure or Important Cultural Property. Scattered throughout the museum and on the outdoor grounds are installations by artists from Japan and abroad such as Andy Warhol, Olafur Eliasson, Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama and Tabaimo.
