Lapoppo Farm: A pioneer in sweet potato treats

Lapoppo Farm is a beloved sweets shop and cafe that was founded in 1972 and specializes in sweet potato confections.

Since its establishment, the brand has dedicated itself to creating sweets that highlight the natural sweetness and flavor of sweet potatoes, such as baked sweet potatoes, daigaku imo candied sweet potatoes, and apple potato pie. They primarily use sweet potatoes carefully cultivated on their own farms as well as on contract farms in Ibaraki and other areas. Emphasizing quality control, they ensure their ingredients are safe, reliable, and delicious.

In addition, Lapoppo Farm is promoting the "Sixth Sector Industrialization," which involves the entire process from farming and manufacturing to sales and sampling. Their strength lies in trustworthy product development and transparency about their producers. More than just a sweets brand, Lapoppo Farm continues to evolve as an advocate for a new food culture that is deeply rooted in the region and agriculture.
Our five recommendations from Lapoppo Farm!
Lapoppo Farm's sweets all feature a delicate flavor that enhances the original taste of sweet potatoes. Here, we will introduce five particularly popular products.
Whole baked sweet potato cake

It tastes just like a baked sweet potato. This cake is made from whole sweet potatoes, baked with the skin on, and is characterized by its natural sweetness and moist, smooth texture. Delicious whether chilled or warmed, this gem enhances the sweet potato’s original flavor. It is a classic sweet we recommend to those who value quality ingredients.
Freshly baked potato apple pie

Crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside, the apple pulp and warm sweet potato filling complement each other perfectly. Sugar is used sparingly to bring out the natural sweetness of the sweet potato and other ingredients.
Candied sweet potato

Daigaku imo is a traditional Japanese sweet potato treat that is deep-fried in oil and coated with a sweet syrup. Lapoppo Farm's "Bicho Daigaku imo" candied sweet potato contains 10 billion lactic acid bacteria per bag of 90 g. It is popular as a healthy candied sweet potato snack that promotes gut health.
Baked sweet potato cake

This sweet potato cake is packed with the natural sweetness of baked sweet potatoes and can be enjoyed whole, including the fragrant baked skin. Its delicious flavor comes from the natural sugar content of the ingredients and its rich, smooth texture. The inherent sweetness of the sweet potato is enhanced by using less sugar.
Sweet potato chips

These thinly sliced sweet potatoes are deep-fried until crispy and carefully coated with a homemade sweet syrup. There are about ten flavors to choose from, including honey butter, matcha milk, and plum bonito cheese. They make an ideal snack when traveling.
Welcome to Lapoppo Namegata Farmers Village, an interactive theme park!

Lapoppo Farm, which offers sweet potato treats across Japan, is more than just a shop for eating in or taking out. Situated in the city of Namegata in Ibaraki Prefecture, about two hours from Tokyo, Lapoppo Namegata Farmers Village is an interactive agricultural theme park and a popular tourist destination. It was opened in 2015 on the site of a former elementary school.

This facility provides year-round sweet potato activities that blend agriculture, food, learning, and entertainment. At the Yakiimo Factory Museum, visitors can learn about the history and production of baked sweet potatoes, make their own mini sweet potato apple pies, and observe the manufacturing process.

Outside the facility, visitors can participate in sweet potato and vegetable harvesting activities, enjoy events centered around nature and flowers, and take part in many other activities that showcase agriculture throughout the seasons. Freshly harvested produce from the fields is available at the Farm to the Table Italian restaurant located within the park. There, guests can indulge in pizza, Hamburg steaks, salads, and other dishes prepared with fresh vegetables, allowing them to savor the authentic flavors and seasonal tastes of the vegetables.

The Oimo Sweets Buffet, available exclusively on weekends and holidays, offers all-you-can-eat sweet potato apple pie and a variety of popular sweets.

In addition, the Farmers Marche offers sweets and vegetables directly from the factory. Visitors can browse for unique souvenirs and snacks that are only available there, such as bulk bags of candied sweet potatoes and discounted sweets at the outlet corner.

Lapoppo Namegata Farmers Village is the perfect destination for travelers seeking to experience Japanese agriculture and food culture.

Namegata, the hidden city of sweet potatoes

Lapoppo Namegata Farmers Village is located in Ibaraki Prefecture because the area is one of the largest producers of sweet potatoes in the Kanto region.

Namegata’s unique natural conditions create the perfect environment for cultivating sweet potatoes. The inland area of the city, situated on a hilly plateau about 30 meters above sea level, features well-drained red soil derived from volcanic ash. This soil is ideal for sweet potato farming, supporting the growth of high-quality sweet potatoes rich in moisture and sweetness.

Namegata is also renowned for hosting the "Yaki-imo Summit" every winter, where producers and distributors passionate about baked sweet potatoes gather. In 2025, the event attracted approximately 200 attendees.
Knowing that the delicious taste of the Lapoppo Namegata Farmers Village sweets is attributed to the city’s climate and agricultural strength makes their flavors even more special.

With its colorful and Instagrammable menu, the restaurant serves as a prominent platform to introduce Japan's sweet potato culture to the world.

Additionally, they operate a food truck inside the venue where you can enjoy the various flavors Lapoppo Farm offers in a more casual setting. If you happen to see them at Expo 2025 Osaka, be sure to stop by.
