Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium

Opened in 2015, the aquarium occupies a plot of land about 1 km inland from Sendai Port on Sendai Bay. It is a white building with a floor space of 9,900 square meters and all barrier-free for easy access. Going through Welcome Hall on the first floor, you’ll reach The Seas of Japan and Tohoku corner. The walk starts off with ”The Submarine Forest of Maboya,” with hundreds of maboya (Japanese ascidians) attached to a rope.
The next is the impressive ”Sparkling of Life” tank. Measuring 7.5 m deep and 14 m wide, it contains finless porpoises, scalloped hammerheads and schools of Japanese pilchards, giving you a glimpse of the fertile sea of Sanriku basked in natural light.
The second floor features ”The Gallery for People,” highlights the bond, the support and cooperation the Tohoku people received from various countries of the world since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Further on, ”The Seas of the World” features fairy penguins, Baikal seals, skunk dolphins and more. And the ”Jellyfish Room” has six tanks of jellyfish, exuding a fantastical atmosphere.
The UMINO-MORI Stadium can seat about 1,000 people and holds performances of dolphins and sea lions.
