Description
Hachimantai Aspite Line is a 27-km prefectural road that connects Hachimantai, Iwate and Kazuno, Akita. An aspite is a volcano that is shaped like a laid-down shield. From the road, you can drive across the volcanic terrain that covers both Iwate and Akita and enjoy its unique scenery.
The road is open from mid-April to early November. Slow curves continue along the mountains from the starting point in Iwate, offering views of natural landscapes including Mt. Iwate, the adored symbol of Iwate, a blue lake in the crater, and Maries' firs. The dramatic snow-walled corridor is famous across Japan. It is open from the beginning of the season to mid-May, and nearly 9 m of snow towers skyward on both sides of the road.
The road is also popular in early October for its famous fiery fall colors.
It is accessible by car, the Hachimantai Nature Bus or by local bus. From when it opens until late May, entry is prohibited at night, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. the next day. The road may be closed all day depending on the weather.
