Description

Sannai-Maruyama Site is the remains of a settlement where people led a sedentary life during the Early to Middle Jomon Period (about 5,900 to 4,200 years ago). Excavations so far have revealed the remains of about 550 pit dwellings, including large ones, and about 890 children’s graves.
The site is maintained as a park that features a large, reconstructed three-tiered symbolic structure comprising wooden platforms supported by pillars planted firmly in the ground. There are also many earthen mounds called Minami Morido, which that consist of a lot of soil, clay vessels, stone tools, and dogu (clay figurines).
After learning about the lifestyle and culture of the Jomon Period at the Jomon Jiyukan, which serves as the entrance to the remains, feel the four seasons of the Jomon Period at the Jomon Theater. Then, move on to see the permanent exhibits in the Sanmaru Museum, which displays around 1,700 artefacts including some 500 Important Cultural Properties excavated from the Sannai-Maruyama Site.
At 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., museum staff conduct a guided tour of the site (this may include a break of about 20 min.)
Also popular is the museum shop, which sells specialty goods.
