Description
The Aomori Museum of Art opened in July 2006, adjacent to the Sannai Maruyama Special Historical Site. Inspired by the historical site, this unique building was designed by architect Jun Aoki and houses a collection of works by unique local artists including Shiko Munakata, Junichiro Sekino, Kojin Kudo, Shuji Terayama and Toru Narita. The museum also stores three stage paintings of the four acts for the ballet Aleko that Marc Chagall, one of the most renowned painters of the 20th century, painted while in exile in the United States. The remaining painting has been borrowed from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and all four paintings are on full display until around March 2021 (tentative).
The museum's theater also offers movies, theater performances and concerts based on local topics.
