Description

In 1943, Mt. Usu erupted and formed a protuberance, more commonly known as a lava dome, in the plains below it: Mt. Showa-Shinzan. Smoke continues to erupt from its rusty surface.

A 20-minute trip from Toya Station on the Donan Bus for Lake Toya Hot Spring, then a 15-minute trip from the last stop on Donan Bus for Mount Showa-Shinzan (closed in winter)
