Description
Tancho Kushiro Airport is the gateway to Eastern Hokkaido, a region known for untouched natural landscapes. Its name “Tancho” comes from the red-crowned cranes that migrate here, a protected Special Natural Monument.
Inside the terminal, the tourist information center provides regional travel tips, event updates, and multilingual brochures, and can answer detailed questions about dining and scenic spots.
Key attractions include Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, Japan’s largest wetland, about 25 minutes by car, and Akan-Mashu National Park, including Lake Akan and Ainu Kotan Village, about 1 hour 20 minutes away.
With no railway service, transportation is by airport shuttle bus or rental car. Buses run to central Kushiro and Lake Akan and depart according to flight arrivals.
Because Eastern Hokkaido covers a vast area, car rentals or checking bus schedules in advance are strongly recommended.
