Japan is known for a whole bunch of weird and crazy things – a plethora of KITKAT flavors being one of them. While some, like the tasty Matcha KITKAT, are really worth snacking on, other creations just raise a lot of eyebrows. Soy Sauce KITKAT is a famous example of that. For this reason, KITKAT has become a popular souvenir to take home from Japan, surprising friends and family at home with flavors they’ve surely never seen before. Now, a whole new flavor has made its debut and sparked quite a heated debate on social networks.
Behold: Nestle Japan’s KITKAT Mini Cough Drop Flavour, called “nodoame” in Japanese. This bizarre flavor is available for a limited time only, with sales starting on Monday, August 21st. One such cough-droppy delight can be had for 140 yen without tax.
Actual cough drops are used for this KITKAT – they are crushed to a fine powder and mixed into the white chocolate layers. This is supposed to make for a refreshing taste, but we will soon find out what people really think about Cough Drop KITKAT.
The guy on the package is none other than Yasutaro Matsuki, who has been a famous football player in his youth and now is an equally famous football commentator. While his enthusiastic face already makes the packaging unusually energetic, Cough Drop KITKAT also comes with its very own slogan, printed boldly on both plastic and cardboard: “This is a fight that absolutely can’t be lost!”
Imagine Mr. Matsuki yelling at right at your face while eating the Cough Drop KitKat – feeling motivated yet?
Under the concept of “Absolutely making this wish happen,” which is a clever pun in Japanese – “kitto, onegai kanau” – KITKAT has already had similar messages of support and motivation. This time, the message is directed towards both players and fans of all kind of sports.
So, if you eat the Cough Drop KITKAT, you might find yourself suddenly cheering on someone – or yourself – in a loud, sports commentator kind of voice. Be prepared.
