Para pelancong atau orang yang datang ke Kyoto menggunakan Shinkansen, pertama-tama harus turun di stasiun Kyoto. Stasiun ini secara bertahap diperluas sejak dibuka pertama kali sebagai tempat pemberhentian kereta Kyoto pada tahun 1877. Selain JR Tokaido Shinkansen, ada Jalur Utama JR Tokaido, Jalur Utama San-in, Jalur Nara, Jalur Biwako, Jalur Kintetsu Kyoto, Jalur Kereta Bawah Tanah Karasuma, dll. Ada banyak rute yang berfungsi sebagai pintu gerbang yang menghubungkan Tokyo, Hokuriku, Osaka, Nara, dll. Kuil Toji yang dibangun pada tahun 794 terletak di barat daya stasiun Kyoto.
