"Minami" merupakan wilayah tempat berkumpulnya distrik-distrik "khas Osaka" seperti Namba, Dotonbori, dan Sennichimae. Selama periode Edo, pondok pertunjukan teater berjejer di sekitar sungai Dotonbori, menandai mulainya pembangunan fondasi wilayah ini sebagai kota hiburan. Stasiun Namba dari Hankyu Railway didirikan pada tahun 1885, dan kemudian kereta api lainnya seperti JR, Nankai Railway dan Osaka Metro juga dibuka di sini sehingga menjadi terminal kedua Osaka. Akses ke prefektur tetangga seperti Nara, Wakayama, Nagoya, dan Mie juga menjadi mudah, dan telah menjadi wilayah pusat kota besar tempat banyak orang berkumpul dari seluruh penjuru.
