Hakone Hotel: Celebrating 100 Years of History by Lake Ashinoko

Since its founding in 1878, the Fujiya Hotel in Hakone's Miyanoshita has been a beloved luxury hot spring resort, hosting dignitaries, political figures, and celebrities. In 1923, the third-generation president of Fujiya Hotel, Shozo Yamaguchi, purchased the lakeside inn 'Hafuya' by Lake Ashinoko and transformed it into what is now the iconic Hakone Hotel.

Still offering the same beautiful experience as it did 100 years ago, Hakone Hotel underwent renovations in April 2022, reopening as a lakeside resort where guests can enjoy timeless moments. Today, it's also well-known as a popular luxury hotel for international visitors to Japan.

Four Unique Experiences Exclusive to Hakone Hotel
Hakone Hotel offers exclusive views and stay experiences you won't find anywhere else. Here, I'll share four of my top recommendations for things you absolutely must experience at this special hotel.
Lakeview Rooms in Every Suite

All 48 rooms offer stunning views of Lake Ashinoko! Plus, from every room except the Moderate Twin, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of both Mount Fuji and Lake Ashinoko right in front of you.
Fine Dining with Stunning Views of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji

From the hotel's restaurants, bar, and lounge, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji through the windows. Indulge in Hakone's unique gourmet offerings, including the chef's signature 'Creative French Cuisine Eaten with Chopsticks,' along with French dishes, teppanyaki, and delicious desserts — all with a touch of local flavor.
Enjoy Water Activities on Lake Ashinoko!

From the hotel's private dock, you can enjoy aquatic sports on Lake Ashinoko, like kayaking, motor boating, and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP).
Explore Hakone's Top Attractions, Just 10 Minutes from the Hotel

Surrounding Hakone Hotel, by Lake Ashinoko, you'll find a variety of restaurants and shops, as well as local attractions like the famous Hakone Pirate Ship. You can also explore historical sites, shrines, temples, and other cultural landmarks — all within walking distance. It's the perfect location to experience the best of what Hakone has to offer.
Relax by the Lake! A 2-Day, 1-Night Stay at Hakone Hotel
Next, we'll share a 2-day, 1-night itinerary that lets you fully enjoy the stunning views of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji, as well as everything Hakone Hotel has to offer.
Day 1: Start with Check-In

Check-in begins at 3 PM. The lobby has a chic atmosphere and exudes a sophisticated, luxurious vibe.

At the reception desk, the hotel staff greets you with a smile. Be sure to have your passport ready.

After reviewing the details on the tablet and signing, your check-in is complete.
During check-in, you'll receive an information sheet with details about your stay and a map of the hotel in English, as well as a guide on onsen etiquette. Be sure to read the guide before heading to the hot springs.
The front desk staff can assist you in English and Chinese (as of February 2025), and you can also use the latest AI translation device available at the front desk.
Check into a Room with Breathtaking Views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashinoko

This time, we're featuring the highly popular 'Superior Twin' room, popular with international guests. With a large window offering breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashinoko, you can enjoy a restful stay on a Simmons bed, ensuring both quality sleep and relaxation.

From the window, you can enjoy a fantastic view as Mount Fuji peeks over the Hakone mountain range.
If you're interested in kayaking, a motorboat cruise, or SUP, check with the front desk about joining these activities from the private dock.
(*Please note that these outdoor services are operated by Ashinoko Club. They are generally available every day, but there may be occasional closures.)

The room attire at Hakone Hotel is a traditional Japanese samue, originally worn by Zen monks while performing daily tasks. Known for its comfort and style, the samue has gained popularity in recent years.
The room is equipped with complimentary mineral water and a coffee machine. The bath amenities include disposable items designed with reduced plastic content to be more eco-friendly. Towels are also provided in the onsen, so there's no need to bring your own from the room.

Popular with families and groups, the 'Premium Fourth' offers the space of two junior suites and can accommodate up to four guests.
With two bedrooms, a living room, a balcony, a dining area, and a separate powder room, this spacious suite features well-appointed facilities and a stylish modern Japanese design that's especially favored by international guests.
Enjoy a Seasonal Parfait

At the Lakeview Lounge Il Lago on the first floor, you can enjoy the 'Seasonal Parfait,' a monthly special created to celebrate the hotel's 100th anniversary. Indulge in a delicious parfait made with an abundance of seasonal fruits.
Relax and Unwind in the Onsen

To boost circulation, it's actually best to enjoy the onsen before a meal. Hakone Hotel features two onsen baths: 'Taikan no Yu' on the 3rd floor and 'Ashinoko no Yu' on the 4th floor, which alternate between male and female use. Here, we'll introduce the Taikan no Yu, which includes both indoor and outdoor baths (Men: 2 PM – midnight, Women: 6 AM – 10:30 AM).

From the round skylight above the outdoor bath, you can enjoy the clear Hakone sky or stargaze while soaking in the warm water. The mineral-rich spring water is great for skin issues and is known for its beauty-boosting properties.
Savor a French Dinner

For the evening's dinner, you can enjoy the chef's top recommendation at the French restaurant Il Miraggio on the first floor — 'Suivant' (16,000 yen), a creative French course designed to be eaten with chopsticks.
Using carefully selected ingredients, the dish incorporates Japanese elements like wasabi, ginger, and ponzu to create a fusion of French and Japanese flavors.
(*Reservation required)
(*If you have food allergies, dietary restrictions, or other special requests, please consult in advance.)

For those who prefer to relax in their room, room service is also a great option. You can enjoy light snacks, pizza, sandwiches, and curry.
After Dinner, Head to the Sophisticated Il Lago

During the day, you can enjoy parfaits at Il Lago, but in the evening, the atmosphere transforms into a sophisticated bar. Tables are bathed in the warm glow of candlelight and in winter, the fireplace is lit. While you're there, why not enjoy a signature cocktail from Hakone Hotel?

In the exclusive guest area FOYER, there's a self-serve wine dispenser offering two types each of red and white wine, as well as two kinds of Japanese sake for six options in total, all available for just 500 yen (60ml) and you can take your glass back to your room. If you're interested, simply purchase drink tokens at the front desk or restaurant.
Day 2: Wake Up Refreshed with a Revitalizing Morning Soak

For your morning bath, head to Ashinoko no Yu on the 4th floor. (Men: 6 AM – 10:30 AM, Women: 2 PM – midnight)
Both the indoor bath and semi-outdoor bath offer stunning views of Lake Ashinoko, and on clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji from the semi-outdoor bath. Refresh yourself with the breathtaking scenery and morning light.
Enjoy Breakfast with a View of Lake Ashinoko

After bathing, enjoy breakfast at Il Miraggio, where you can indulge in the 'Lake View Breakfast Buffet' (3,300 yen for adults).
The buffet includes a choice of one main dish such as an omelette, scrambled eggs, or French toast, along with an all-you-can-eat salad bar featuring soup, bread, and salad (kids' plates are also available).
Savor a delicious, hotel-made breakfast while taking in the stunning views of Lake Ashinoko.
Relax and Unwind in the Exclusive Guest Area Before Departure

Before checking out, take some time to relax in the exclusive guest area, surrounded by soft natural light and inspiring views. Enjoy complimentary drinks like coffee, tea, and matcha lattes, while browsing through the mini library's collection of English books.
You can also take memorable photos with Mount Fuji in the background at the courtyard's photo spot.

On pleasant days, you can relax in a hammock by the lakeside, enjoying the gentle breeze and sound of the waves as your 'background music,' perfect for reading or taking a nap. It's truly a luxurious way to spend your vacation!
- The Torii-yaki Fireworks Festival, held every year on August 5th, launches fireworks by the lakeside, right in front of the hotel. Guests are treated to an up-close view of the fireworks from the courtyard or their rooms.
Prepare for Your Sightseeing Adventure Before Check-Out

At 11 AM, it's time to check out. For those planning to explore Hakone after their stay, the Hakone Carry Service can help by transporting your luggage to Hakone Yumoto Station. For more details, be sure to ask the front desk in advance.
Set Off on Your Hakone Adventure!

Just a stone's throw from Hakone Hotel is Hakone Town Port, where the Hakone Pirate Ship departs.
The view from the lakeshore is beautiful, but the scenery from the ship offers a whole new perspective! Be sure to board the special cabin for a luxurious and relaxing cruise.

The Hakone Ekiden is a 100-year-old marathon relay in which university students complete a round-trip race of 217.1 km between Tokyo and Hakone and one of Japan's most exciting New Year's events.
The Hakone Ekiden Museum, showcasing its history, photos, videos, and personal items from the athletes, is just a 4-minute walk from Hakone Hotel. Since the hotel is near the halfway point of the race, it becomes a popular spot for spectators during New Year's.

About a 5-minute drive from the hotel, the Narukawa Art Museum houses over 4,000 pieces, with a focus on modern Japanese paintings.
While the museum's collection of priceless artwork is impressive, many visitors also come for the stunning views of Lake Ashinoko from the museum's observation lounge.

At the museum's café, Tea Lounge Kisetsufu, the recently popular 'Mount Fuji Beer' (950 yen) is a must-try. The special glass shaped like a mountain is filled with 'Drift Ice Draft,' a blue beer from Abashiri, Hokkaido. It's become a hot trend for visitors looking to capture the perfect Instagram-worthy moment with Mount Fuji in the background.

Souvenirs Shopping at Hakone Hotel

The top-selling item is a postcard featuring a view of Mount Fuji overlooking Lake Ashinoko (110 yen each). You can even mail it right away from the hotel's nearby post office.
Other recommendations include a sake cup with a lucky 'maneki-neko' (good luck cat) design (1,210 yen), and a coaster made from Hakone's traditional Yosegi-zaiku marquetry (1,100 yen). The maneki-neko is a traditional Japanese good luck charm believed to bring prosperity and happiness.
